High grade coins from original rolls

tjkilliantjkillian Posts: 5,578 ✭✭✭
It seems that many folks are getting high grades when searching through original rolls of coins. Where can I get an original roll of either 1861 quarters or 1861 half dollars or bags of original 1861 seated dollars so I can go through them and cherry pick the best ones. All these folks getting MS-67's MS-68's are making me jealous. I just hope original rolls or bags are not too expensive.

I just checked my closet, but all I can find are bags of 1862 quarters and halves, sorry.

I live in TN where most civil war battles took place. I think I saw quite a few of those 1861s around. And I know some of them had "CSA" or something on them. They're so common, people just realize how uncollectable they are.

Huh??? Most civil war battles took place in Tennessee? That is news here in Virginia!
  • To find the rolls that you are looking for requires a time machine rental.........Good luck.........Ken
  • Did you mean 1961?

Eric, you're right. Just looked it up. We're #2. Link to info

We had 187,000 west TN in the confederacy and 51,000 east TN in the union ranks. (East TN is very different from middle and west TN)

I was going by number of distinct battles, but both ways are correct. There were 38 battles in TN, 123 in VA. Here is my source. I always wondered what I would find with a metal detector at some of the lesser known sites close to me, but there are some pretty strict regulations about digging around in battlefields here.

One of the reasons I mentioned 1861 is that I'm putting together a mint/proof set of 1861. I choose that year because of the high mintages, and the romance of the year. I am also a civil war reenactor so the year is very close to home, although I do live in California.

Anyone have any PCGS 1861 Silver dollars? I need it a three dollar gold and a double eagle and my year set woull be complete.

  • Hey TJ,

I thought of doing the same thing in the same year, but so far only have the 1861 PR64 Seated Dime.

How hard is it to find the others?

Yeah - there is a coin warehouse in my city that you can pick up nice, choice, original rolls of most coins in most series, denominations and dates.

Let me get my pencil...now what were you looking for?

Dan - Because of the high mintages they are especially easy to find. The two toughies are the silver dollar and the three dollar gold. I checked the pop figures before I started to make sure it was reasonable to even consider it. You can see mine on my type set at: http://www.pcgs.com/new_set_registry/display_coins.chtml?regsetid=2067&alltime=no
I'm waiting on delivery of my trime so it is not listed. I'm mixing proofs with business strikes with nary a thought.

    Tom,
If you're really nice to your bank teller, maybe she'll go into that special back corner of the vault for you...
