If you like a specific design...

airplanenutairplanenut Posts: 22,245 ✭✭✭✭✭
Should you worry about getting more than one date? I prize my MS66 1938-D buffalo nickel because I love the design so much, but was wondering- do you think if I were to get another buffalo, should I worry about the date, or just that it's nice? I'm considering an MS65 of the same date...

Thanks for the opinions!

I don't think anybody should have more than one example of any given coin.

Russ is 100% correct, I have one ugly Kennedy and its enough for me.

I just realized I have four of those ugly Franklins. Guess I need to throw three away.

There`s supporters for or against I`m sure on that question. Russ, of course, is known for being almost exclusively for 1964 Kennedys. So thats one option. Another option you have is to get a type set of Buffalos. Asking around for what could be in a type set of Buffalos would be interesting. Like a 1930 - 1938 set in mintstate.

    Clark,

The problem is that if I ever moved the desk I'd be left with an ugly impression in the carpet.

  • Yeah.... you'd have to tear up the carpet.

    Forget I mentioned it.

  • No one can argue that the Barber design is by far the most beautiful to ever grace a coin.image

That's why I buy lots of them; how could I possibly loose?

    CCR,

The problem is $$$. I'm on a low budget, and once you get even to 1935 or 1936 and before, most of the buffs are quite expensive in MS64 or above- I just think that a 64 or above will have the added pazaaz of extra luster/better strike than a lower grade- the 38-D, of course, having pretty much the best strike in the series... maybe I should buy an AG 1926-S and find it upgrades to MS63 image

    WARNING:

Watch it Jeremy, or you'll end up an obsessed, hopeless date/mm collector, and YOU'LL HAVE TO HAVE THEM ALL.

That would be different.image The person selling it would have to be blind to get away with that.image

Well, maybe you could try a mintmark set in MS64 like - 1937, 1937-D, and 1937-S. That way you`ll have a 2 year set and a mintmark set ( given that you already have the 38-D ). Or do a Russ style of collecting and collect a majority of a single year just because you enjoy it.

I have a 38-D myself in MS66. Buffalos are a pretty cool coin. Kind of like pugs. There`s alot of design in a small package. Being what I consider a High-Relief type of a coin makes it, at least in my eyes, more appealing.

Wouldn't a Buffalo nickel type set consist of a whole two coins?

I guess I can somewhat understand repeatedly buying the same coin, but for me, there would have to be something different about the coin, other than the grade.

I have multiples of 1878 Morgan dollars, but most are distinguishable varieties. When I do wind up with duplicates, I tend to want to keep the best and barter the others away.

Why not just allot what you're currently willing to spend and save until you can get another issue?

Yeah...but who is that guy on the obverse ???image

Well, what I would do is collect them all. I really like the Indian Cent series, so here's what I'm doing. Knowing I'll never be able to afford a complete set in MS-65 RED, collect what is comfortable for me. I hope to complete the set with an average grade of MS-64R/B. But, I still have some higher grade examples, such as a common date MS-65RED. Collecting by date/mint is a fun way to make sure you get all the examples. You will begin to see the differences between dates and mints and how the coins changed over time.

I'll never do a Date/ MM set again (oh no, I said neverimage). Once I get done Selling parts of my collection that no longer interest me, I'll most likely get a couple more pieces for my gold type set, and then lean towards a silver type collection of some sort. I am sure however, that I will still be seduced by a killer toned franklin every now and then.
