Are there DMPL Peace Dollars?

If not, why?

Also there seems to be more high-grade Morgans (MS67 and MS68) than Peace dollars. Does that have something to do with the Peace dollar’s tendency to be weakly struck?

I think PCGS will only apply the PL and DMPL designation to the Morgan Dollar series. NGC is designating any coin that deserves it.

Nope. And I'm sure others will add more to this, but there are not as many for several reasons: planchet preparation was not as good, the dies were not polished to the same degree, the fields are more sculpted than flat.

  • The Peace dollar is a beautiful coin. Proof-like examples sure would be in demand. I know that proofs exist, but they're awfully expensive.

Right, but the peace dollar proofs are matte in appearance. The US mint followed a european trend in making proofs then. But discovered that people like shiny reflective proofs. I have seen peace dollars with great luster, but nothing more than frosty or somewhat satiny luster.

I believe that I have seen 22-S, 23-S and 25-S dollars in PL, but it has been a long while and I wouldn't swear on any of the specific dates. I know a dealer with at least a few PL Peace dollars in his personal collection. All are rare. DMPL's are non-existent.

I never seen one that would come even close. Do you think NGC will give a Peace it's proper designation if in fact it is PL? They are using the designation on all US coins that deserve it.

    Unquestionably.

I believe NWCS has hit on it. Peace dollars just weren't minted the way Morgan dollars were. By 1921 mint personnel were no longer providing TLC to silver dollar dies and planchets. Other contributing factors: less sharply detailed design, more coins struck per die, less inspections of the coins.

    W. Miller reports there a few semi-proof like Peace dollars dated 1922-D, 1927-S, 1934-D, and 1934-S. None are Pl or DMPL. The Morgan dollar dies were basined while Peace dollar dies were not.
