A question for the coin dealers.

Why do you need the barcode on the front of the slab?According to Mr. Hall the barcode was put on front for you. Why?

  • Hi smprfi

I not a dealer but I think I read in here some time ago that the reason is because they can scan it from the front and verify the date and grade info without having to turn it around. Saves time from having to keep turning it over to scan and read. At least that's what I remember. image

Pennies make dollars, and dollars make slabs!

....inflation must be kicking in again this dollar says spend by Dec. 31 2004!

maybe they should put the magnetic strip on the front so the dealer could just swipe the slab!

Coin dealers alreay have too much of a reputation among a lot of people for being dishonest and wanting to rip people off. Please stop saying things like

If anyone has info on a reasonable priced inventory control system that reads the PCGS and NGC barcodes, please let me know. I'm tired of typing.

Many dealers put stickers on the back of the slab and don't want to cover up the barcode.

  • I too would like to hear about products that would read the bar code and enter info into my spread sheet.

Does anybody use a bar code reader on their coins?

Very simple answer....so we can scan it in and out of inventory...

In addition its funny that you bring this up...we were working on a small cheap system that dealers could use at shows....its not hard technology now...pretty available and does really work except for two things...most dealers dont want to invest in the system when they hear the price and two most dealers have raw items without slabs so they need to generate bar code stickers to put on these items....where do you draw the line... is the coin in the junk box worth scanning....

I use the barcode for an inventory system but hate having it on the front. It's ugly. I don't buy the explanation, a much more logical reason would be that it's cheaper for PCGS (single-sided printing).

    Psssst.....don't let em kid ya.

Take a CLOSE look at the 3rd, 5th, and 8th bars in the code.

It's a secret code for DEALERS to let em know how much it will be worth in a year.

    .........MUM.......is da word. ssshhhhh

There is a device that might be appropriate for someone who just wants a way to scan a barcode and have it entered into an application as if it were typed from the keyboard. It's called the IRIS Pen II Executive and goes for about $180. It's shaped like a very fat pen and connects via a USB port. You could scan a barcode and the pen would output the value into whatever application you have active at the time, as if you typed it in.

We bought one for work and just got it yesterday, and I was putting it through its paces today.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
