Getting back in the game

Hello to all. This is my first of what will be many posts on what I have found to be a very interesting, entertaining, and informative board. I have finally decided to fully commit to start collecting in this hobby once again. I collected intensely through those outstanding years of 86-94, but then decided to get out because of all of the new product that was coming out I didn’t know what to buy, and couldn’t afford much of what I wanted. So I just stopped completely even though I have dabbled a bit here and there ever since picking up a few favorite players and deal or two that I have come across.
I have always liked the vintage market but could rarely afford it, but my thoughts is it is better to save up and spend your money on a few cards then to buy new stuff that is hot now and tomorrow you have something that is worthless. With all of this in mind I have decided on a few player sets to try for as well as some other complete sets. At first I thought starting a set from the 70’s would be my first goal, but after reconsidering I have decided on doing a 51 Bowman set ( in mid grade since I cant afford many of those 75,000 Mantles) for the following reason. My first year of collecting cards when I was 7 yrs old I wanted the Mickey Mantle from this set, didn’t know why, just did, maybe because it was one of the most valuable cards at that time and being so young just saw it as a dream. Well it wasn’t a dream that year I got probably the greatest Christmas present of my life, a 1951 Bowman Mickey Mantle rookie. So I guess I started my first set 16 years ago and am now looking for my second card of that set.
As I stated earlier I had considered doing a 70's set. While I had this in mind I recently made a purchase of approx. 8000 cards from 77, 78, and 79. I still havent ruled this out and would like to know what to look for in these years especially the 79's since they are the nicest ones of the collection that I purchased. If I however decide against these years I will probably sell them, so any one interesed lmk. The 79's are the best and no one here would probably be interesed in the rest. There is roughly 4000 cards from 79 that are very nice.
I look forward to hearing everyones input on this board.

Welcome to the boards!!
The 1979 Topps baseball set is a challange.... It'll take you a while, but the rewards of a complete BIG set is unsurpassed.
Good luck on whatever set you do!!!

CHEERS!!
volmaniac - welcome !
Lessons learned from these boards :
1. Don't spend too much at first.
2. Collect some cards from each of the years you suspect you might be interested in.
3. After some time, you will find a set, or sets, that truely inspire you to begin collecting seriously.
4. Figure a grade that the set is attainable for you in.
5. Determine a realistic budget, and a realistic time frame for completion, and then stick to it.
6. Go crazy, and blow every penny you can get your hands on to complete the set in the highest possible grade.
Good luck, and have fun !

Welcome to the boards. Good luck with your collection.
There is good advice on these board's. Wolfbear makes some great points.

Welcome to the boards!!! I must say your name makes me cringe when I think of Clint Stoener's fumble with under a minute to go when my beloved Razorbacks had the VOLS beat a few years ago.
Vintage is the way to go, since it provides us "oldtimers" a nice stroll down memory lane!!!

Welcome to the boards...it is a safe haven for us vintage addicts.

Welcome to the boards.
Is your 51 Mantle from your childhood in gradeable condition? If so, how great would that be to have a card from your childhood in your registry set. Especially one of that caliber.
Good luck with your collection...

As Rod Serling used to say, "You have entered the Twilight Zone."
Having recently turned a closet collector into an "Ebay/PSA" monster, I'll tell you the same thing I told him, "You're hooked, man, and it's gonna cost you!"
Welcome to the club.
Above all have fun
