Move over Hal Naragon

I've resigned myself to having to put together my '57 Topps set in mostly PSA 5s and 6s, so I haven't been paying much attention the PSA 8 market but this auction caught my eye.

Check out the PSA 6 (Yes, PSA 6) Lou Berberet on ebay right now.

If you thought $1,000 was a lot for a PSA 8 common was bad, this will put you over the edge. :-)

Never learned how to do the links here and don't have time to learn for this post. Sorry.

That bid can't be real. Here's $10- saying the bid doesn't stay and/or the deal doesn't go through.

Even gaspipe would like the odds on this one!
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

  • <"That bid can't be real.">

You mean "bids" (plural). There's two of them four-figure suckers. What if Mr. #1 Bidder backs off, cancels his bid and somebody re-enters at $1,099? Wonder what Keith thinks?

What is the justification for that statement????????? The high bidder has 2218 positive feedbacks, 0 negatives, and has NEVER retracted a bid.

I'm just going with my gut on this one, guys.

The card is maybe a $20 card. Tops. The card has a HUGE population in high grade -- something like 48 PSA 8's out of 100 examples submitted.

finleyjr@multipro.com bids on many 1957 Topps cards -- but none in amounts like this. Only two other bids over $100, and that was for Jim Bunning and a Yankees Power Hitters card.

mojasprt@aol.com bids on 1957 PSA cards -- but has never paid more than $20-$30 for a PSA 6, except for a star card.

Bottom line is this: Bidding seems to be way too non-sensical to make me believe it is legitimate. Now I do not suggest that I have any knowledge of what is going on with who, where, why, etc. But this is a common card in high population. Both bidders seem to have superb Ebay reputations. I do not pretend that I know what is going on or why.

Nonetheless -- I cannot accept that this auction will be completed at this price level to the buyer's and seller's satisfaction. There seems to be no legitimate reason for a 50x price level on this card, which is why I cannot accept it. I hope for andiehaley's sake that everything is legitimate. He is a superb dealer, and I have had positive transactions with him.

For my money's worth, I'll take this ungraded example at 1/1000 of the price

Would you like to take me up on the $10 bet that the deal does not go through for $1,125 or more, and that both the seller and buyer receive positive feedback? If so, PM me and consider it a bet.

I'm totally baffled by this whole scenerio. My $20 PSA-6 is a hard sale because for a few dollars more a PSA-7 can be had. But $1125.00 on Keith's PSA-6 is something out of the Twilight Zone...jay

JOHN - I will place my beauty of Berberet on PSA tonight. I'm hoping to meet or exceed the $20 web price I have. And my card while still oc is about 10% less oc then Keiths. So we will see what happens...jay
  • I don't know about running that gem on Ebay. I'd call Mastro and negotiate a sweet consignment deal.
Although my buy price remains at $9.99 with that special 60¢ shipping deal.

Guess we'll never know the story on that one. It was just ended early with all bids cancelled. I would have thought the high bidder just typed in his max incorrectly, but with another bidder pushing him, that person was going pretty high, too.

This is SPAM! The Buy, Sell, & Trade Forum is the proper place for this type of post. image

Did you notify the two bidders on Keith's auction that you had posted it? If you want, I'll shill it up to a grand for you! image

    Good luck.

JEB - Sorry for the admitted spam of this fine lot. But Basilone prompted me to list the card, and I obliged since thats what the masses want. The other auction has no relevant info. so none of the bidders can be found, but they have 7 days to find this auction on their own. Oh and feel free to bid $1000 on the lot, hopefully someone will match it and I'll even comp you the shipping/insurance fee. Remember this isn't just a card, its LOU BERBERET!!! ...jay

Holy Crap! Theres actually several bids on this card, a virtual who's who from the message boards. I have a feeling this will be a game like "hot potato" many will bid, and all will hope someone will top themimage ...jay

WOW- my high bid didn't even last 1 minute!

  • We will see how long my bid lasts. I had to change it while bidding.

This could be a $10 winner with 40 bids placed on it image.
  • qualitycardsqualitycards Posts: 2,811 ✭✭✭
Apparently there is a huge following for BERBERET, its been viewed around 3 dozen times and has almost 10 bids all within an hour or 2 of when it was posted. Yesterday I put on 13 PSA-8 1958's, many are centered and beautiful, 24 hours later only 1 bid on 1 of the 13, the reason for the inactivity, there was no LOU BERBERET!...jay

Watch out for gemmintman. He likes to snipe with one second to go. I could see him doing that
here and somehow trying to convince the registry folks to add this as card #61 to the 64 Topps
    Giants.

    aconte
  • I almost died when I saw that Wayne was the high bidder on this one! I am definitely going to bid on this card. Here is what I think happened. EBay had a decimal slide. I'll bet those guys were bidding $11.25, not $1,125.00. They probably contacted the seller and he ended the auction early. The reason I say this is because just a few minutes ago I clicked on an auction that I had been watching that had like 13 hours left on it. When the auction opened up, it said that the auction had ended, but the regular line about it ending early was not there. And I found that I could still bid on it at the bottom. So I did. And I got outbid. And then auction went back to normal when I refreshed the page. It did not end early afterall. Weird, huh? There might some some virus at eBay or a malfunction or something. Just my theory. :-/

    Jay,

You should have forked over the extra $0.10 to Ebay for the 10 day auction. At the current rate of bidding, you could have gotten several thousand bids! You'll probably have to settle for a little under $1,000 final bid for the 7 day auction! image

No fair! My shill bid was placed first. image I believe this may be the first ever "shill bidding war".

Wouldn't it be funny if someone outside of the message board actually ended up winning the card for an outrageous amount?

  • Lou Berberet for the player registry!
  • Congrats to Zardoz for the huge win on the big Lou.

I thought there might be some last minute sniping, but I think the other bidders (including myself) figured his maximum bid would dwarf any snipe and was therefore unsnipeable image.

Like a previous post said, the list of bidders is like a who's who of the boards.

That was a lot of fun image.

  • VirtualizardVirtualizard Posts: 1,936 ✭✭
    Congratulations Jay!

That was a slick move you made by capitalizing on the popularity of the previous "Lou" auction. Although you didn't realize the prices that the previous auction could have, you still pocket $15 for a card that probably would have sat in your inventory for years.

    Still spam though! image

JEB - As a good will gesture to the legendary ZARDOZ for winning this card, I will send it to him gratis, no charge for card or shipping & insurance. So am I still convicted of the crime of Spam, If i did not profit at all?, in fact losing money on the eBay insertion & final selling fees. Perhaps ZARDOZ may start a yearly tradition every April with the "Passing Of The Berberet" he can decide on the parameters of this yearly prize if he so chooses. The card ended w/ 28 bids and over 200 hits, so apparently this is a card to be reckoned withimage ...jay
