What am I missing here on this PCGS 1918/7-D XF40 5c

Don't these go for more like $4-5k? Even at that price for a pop ?/100+ coin I feel it is over valued.

The power of a real time auction open to the coin loving masses (including the rich and uninformed) from the comfort of their homes. Whoever and however they came about, ebay is it for the future in coins.
The setting up of other roads
To travel on in old accustomed ways
I still remember the talks by the water
    The proud sons and daughter
That knew the knowledge of the land
Spoke to me in sweet accustomed ways

It sold for what it should sell for. Find another. image Find another a little better. image The price skyrockets after au, and there is no way you can pick up an au for anywhere near the sheet price. The coin at least doubles in price at unc. putting the xf and au graded coins in higher demand. The Greysheet numbers for a coin like this aren't even close. Well, maybe close, but very low.

The high bidder is Jay Parrino. He pays VERY strong money for key date coinage.
  • It would be nice if a dealer would share his thoughts on this auction.

    The winning bidder paid 7,777.

From heritage site, all PCGS unless mentioned.

Max - we have been able to sell VF, XF (for which CDN bid is $5850 and ask is $6350) and AU examples to other dealers for CDN levels in the past.

As a dealer, we would probably be a buyer at approximately the $6000 level and we're not THE highest buyer on coins like that. The winning price seems somewhat high, but $4000-$5000 is way too low for such a coin in the current market.

Prices for this coin have jumped (though I tend to agree that the final price for this particular coin seems high).

My question is: Is this everyone's idea of an EF (XF) coin?

If it isnt quite an EF but is labled as such it would be because of a thing called market grading.
The more sought-after the coin is, the more leeway is given in grading I think.

Market grading only benefits the dealers and / or sellers and ultimately hurts the buyers.

Thats my take on it anyway.
