CU priceguide for Frankies updated - latest on sales figures

Periodically I catch particular sales of MS64 and MS65 Frankies - both in FBL and non FBL to see what the market is doing with respect to the prices posted on the CU board. In the first sale that I tracked back in September of last year the spread between the sales prices of the particular sale that I was tracking was as follows:

Sept. 2002 - 24 MS64(FBL/Non) sold at 53.7% (average) of CU Prices and 19 MS65's sold at 37.33% (average) of CU Prices
March 2003 - 22 MS64 sold at 44.76% of CU Prices and 27 MS65's at 51.95% (average) of CU Prices
April 2003 - 24 MS64's sold at 44.63% of CU Prices and 19 MS65's sold at 43.50% (average) of CU Prices

The CU prices have been updated to better reflect the prices of these coins, but yet as you can see - what they are listed at and what they can be had for is still significant.

The CU Price guide is supposed to be retail and I can see where the prices if you HAVE to have a particular coin would apply. However, if you shop and are patient, you can pick up significant saving on these coins. It appears that as a rule of thumb - 45-50% of CU prices for Frankies in these two grades works pretty well.

Hope this is informative.

Frank

Frank: I did not study the MS64/65 prices as you have, but, I do see significant issues with the MS66FBL pricing. For example, the 1948(d) in 66FBL continues to support your theory of 40%-50% of guide (that coin is listed at $3750) for a careful and patient purchase. However, drop down to the 49(d) in MS66FBL and that coin tends to trade ABOVE 100% OF CU PRICE - perhaps up to 150% of price guide depending upon quality!!

And (back to the 65FBL for a moment), of course, the 53(s) in MS65FBL would certainly not trade at 40%-50% of the listed $15,000 and, in fact, the last trades at auction have been nearly 85-90% of that price (and that was a while ago).

So, like every other modern series, the Franklins do require a great deal of study and avoidance of "blind faith" in any price guide IMHO. image

Thanks Frank, and your little dog too! I have messed around with the series long enough to agree with you.
Wondercoin makes some good points as well, but for the most part, your analysis is very good.
However, My 48D 66fbl wont leave my sweaty hands for anything less than 3,000.00image
