Toned Twenty Cent coin

Toning and cameo seem to be hot topics! I thought this Twenty Center was a cameo coin. I sent it to PCGS for a review and they didn't agree. It is pretty well toned. It also seems pretty well frosted. I might dig it out and see if I can get a better picture.

NCS might be able to take off the toning, and make it a nice cameo coin. Of course, that's only if you don't like that beautiful toning.image

Hmmmm, that piece sure looks like a cameo to me from that pic, especially the reverse which nearly looks to be a deep cameo, even with the toning. Very nice piece regardless.

That's a gorgeous and very rare piece! Although the obverse may have been the reason it didn't make cameo - it is still a great piece of Americana! image
  • Thanks for the comments!

There is a coin I bought sight unseen. I bought it directly from a collector based on his description and had full return priviledges.

I think it is a cameo coin. I'd love to see cameo on the holder. But not enough to send this puppy to NCS image It will stay like this as long as I have it.

I'm getting the impression that PCGS tends to avoid giving cameo to toned coins. I did see that cameo proof Morgan on another thread. Perhaps that one is clean enough on the devices it makes cameo? My twenty center is toned over the devices.

I need to make a trip to my safe deposit box for another reason. I will grab this one and try for another photo.

    Carl,

I believe that there is a great deal of inconsistency with the "cameo" and "deep/ultra cameo" designations. As Taro said "Very nice looking coin no matter what the holder says"!

It seems to have frost on devices, but what about the depth of field?

Awful nice coin, would you return it because you did not get an upgrade?

Nice coin. From the scan, the reverse looks better and has greater contrast. Now if it were reversed and the obverse had that contrast, the coin would have a cameo designation.
