The mailman arrived this afternoon, and with him came the final three pieces to my 1938-64 Circulation Strikes Jefferson Registry Set. The final statistics:
Sixteen MS67s
Forty-two MS66s
Thirteen MS65s
Forty of the 71 coins are tied for finest known, of which one is a Pop. 1/0
Average grade of set -- 66.04
And yet, the set is not even in the Top 10 because no coin has Full Steps... so none get any bonus points (ranging from 2 to 5 points per coin) for Full Steps.
It was a GREAT learning experience, and I can assure you that the challenging of finding very high grade Jeffersons -- with or without steps -- is a very challenging and entertaining chase. And compared to Morgan dollars, its a refreshingly affordable endeavour.

Jeffersons are surprisingly tough to find even without full steps whether they are
old or moderns. I tried to put together a set like this back in the mid-70's and gave
up in frustration. Of course in those days all the coins were "raw" and finding the
gems was very labor intensive. I looked through hundreds of rolls and had only a
few coins in the set.
Enjoy your coins......
Thanks!!
Next on the Jefferson agenda is gradually (and I doubt I'll have any other choice in the matter) picking up coins needed for the "With Varieties" set. There are also 11 upgrades that I think are doable, nine of which are probably affordable.
Other than that, I'll keep plugging away on my Morgan set. It's already complete, but it will never be finished.

Congratulations on a one-tough-task!

Needless to say, putting together a 71-coin set involved buying more than just 71 coins. (Translation: I have duplicates and upgrades.)
Let me know if you'd like to see a list.

I would highly recommend going after those varieties as you mentioned; they add
a lot of interest to the set and some are very challenging to locate!

I do like full steps but I have not been happy with many coins designated as such. Some coins just don't have full steps but the fine line of a FS coins IMHO is too vague. Certainly a 6 stepper is a 6 stepper but in between is subjective. Many non steppers are not designated as such because of a small tick or just because. This certainly hasn't stopped me from the pursuit of the "Poor Mans Morgan" (Jefferson Nickels).
Enjoy your coins everyone.....the Whole Coin.
Again....a very nice set Dennis
