Todays Newps: Merc and Morgan

The merc here has beautiful rich luster. It's only a 64 FB, but the quality of the luster is exceptional. And there are many bargains out there in raw mercs. Picked this one up for $8. The morgan is really nice, the luster is exceptional, beyond what the photograph shows. Hope you enjoy looking at them!

Why do you say the Merc is a 64 coin ? Are there any slide marks on the coin or minor hair lines ? Looks a little better to me, especially if it has booming luster.

True, it may be a bit higher. The luster is rich, but there are a few hits on the cheek and neck that I thought would limit the grade. The marks on the rev, too, would seem to make the coin have a 66 as an upper limit and 64 as the lower limit.

Oh, the luster isn't super bright, though. Not the dipped bright look. A little more satiny.

The Merc looks almost the same as a 41D raw coin I have. Just a hint of old time tone and smooth silky luster. A pretty light brown tone radiates from the entire surfaces. I just picture your coin as the same thing. image

I particularly like the Morgan Dollar. The way the devices stand out from the toned

background and the beautiful deep luster. Nice purchase. Also it looks free from marks,

    is it raw or slabbed?

Sounds like it. Fully original, beautiful texture, and eye appealing! One thing I have begun to see is learning the difference between a dipped bright coin with luster and original luster. At the grading class, I spent 10 minutes with the graders discussing why a 67 merc was better than a 66 with fewer marks. Eventually they convinced me that the luster was better on the 67 and that the 66 was a 68 that got dipped brighter and reduced the luster to a 66. After seeing that, I realized luster is more than reflectivity.

I really like that Morgan Neil. It has the deep russet color that I will buy every time I see it. Reminded me of one of the coins in my "marathon submission". I think mine is a lock for 65 and possibly 66, maybe one of these days I'll know.

As I mentioned earlier, I have one just like it at PCGS. I am going to sell it when it comes back, so if you want one like that, drop me a PM.

Thanks guys. image The guy had some nice toned coins in his case, but I wasn't sure of his skills with toned coins as he had a number of AT coins in 2nd and 3rd tier holders as well as some nice ones in PCGS and NGC holders. But this one was more appealing to me than some of the more colorful ones he had that weren't AT. The luster really is nice on it. It's graded spot on, too. A strong 64.

That merc was one of three I picked up. One thing I learned from the grading class is that brightness isn't the same as luster. And if you can detect good luster that's more satin than frosty, you can get some good deals from dealers who think brightness = high grade!

BTW, looking at it again, Ken you're right. I think this is a 65 Merc. image No plans to slab it, either.
