Home PSA Set Registry Forum

Set Registry at 5000--I am at 103.

With the submission of a few more early 60s football sets,1936 S&S Game in baseball, and posting 1970 Kelloggs baseball, I am now at 103 sets on the registry(66 baseball, 25 football, 9 basketball, 2 hockey and 1 misc., I am now at 103 sets trying to complete in psa 8 or better. This omits HOF sets, player sets, team sets etc.
While 7 are now complete and many others are nearing completion, I still need a lot of help and ebay is just too time consuming.
I will pay a fair price for any card I need or have in less than than psa 8. I will also buy sets or partial sets if it makes sense.
Rather than list the sets, simply check the vintage sets in any year pre-1969 in baseball, pre 1970-71 in Football and pre-1965 in football and chances are strong I am collecting it. There are a small number of very expensive sets on hold currently while I attempt to complete some more,
As I indicated, I will be showing my collection before the National in Atlantic City. If you are interested, simply send me an e-mail and I will do my best to set up a mutually convenient time.

Good luck on the sets and showing your collection during the national is a very nice gesture on your part as this could become time consuming. Congrats on the 68 MaCauliffe 9 I believe you hit a 1of 1. A very tough card.

    Dave,

Just luck on the McAulliffe. Raw set I had bought around 8 years ago.
I show collection to friends and neighbors who think its impressive but don't know much about the hobby. Occasionally a dealer comes by the house and that is fun. Obviously the ones that would appreciate it the most are collectors.
Five collectors have indicated interest so far--I will either let people see it individually or in groups of two or three.Good luck on your sets.

I bought that 38Goudey DiMaggio from a famous "mint" dealer in one of his auctions 9 years ago. It was advertised as a strong nrmt-mt. PSA graded it 4 and upon close inspection there is a very light surface crease. Now did that mint dealer see that crease and figure that noone else would or is he such a poor judge of cards he never caught it. Probably the latter.
Anyway, the DiMaggio does have the appearance of a nrmt-mt card.

Jim, That guy doesn't "miss" anything. He has always managed to find flaws in any cards of mine that he has attempted to buy over the years.

    Frank,

I stopped buying from him about 8 years ago when a set of hockey tall boys he advertised as "so mint you could eat off of them" or some ridiculous words like that were in fact about excellent. That was it with him as far as I was concerned. Either he was blind, crooked or both but I was finished as a customer. I returned that set immediately.

I saw "mint" today at a show in Ohio.....in 6 hours no activity...he eventually packed up and left at approx 2pm.

  • Does anybody know anybody who has ever taken him up on actually eating off the cards? The DiMaggio card doesn't seem to me to be his fault. He graded it like he saw it. You got it, agreed, kept it, and for 8 years or so thought you had a great card. You sent it to PSA and they examined the card at every possible angle and found a very minor surface crease. The great looking card you thought you had is still a great looking card, but it just happens to be in a 4 holder. Your card is not worth a 4 price. Your card would sell for a huge premium to people who think that the crease doesn't need to be there. Even though you probably paid big bucks for it back then, you might be able to even make a few bucks on it by now.

    Waittill,

I never considered returning the DiMaggio--now if it was trimmed perhaps but my fault for not looking at it more closely.
"people who think the crease doesn't need to be there"--maybe, but I do not travel with that crowd--I probably would just sell it to 1420 Sports when I find an 8.

That is fine by me ... image

There are many raw examples out there. I have seen at least 25 in the two years I have been looking for either version of this card. The prices for the cards - all PSA 3 to 4 in my opinion - were too high.

Is the dealer referred to as "mint" also known as Al?

    Jim,

Checked out the list of sets in your collection - only two words that I can think of "frickin nuts!"

I have told my wife in the past that when she plants me in the ground, she can call Chris Porter and get all of the money back. But, if I had your collection - she'd have planted me by now!!!

Definitely keep me on the list of New Jersey neighbors that wants to take the tour before AC. Thanks again!
