help on grading nice Jefferson nickels

darktonedarktone Posts: 8,437 ✭✭✭
I came across several nice Jefferson nickels that I thought were good enough to take a chance on even though I really don't know anything about grading them. Could somebody that knows these help me grade these and even put a value on them if you like. Thank s mike image

                Heres my novice-like opinion..........

38D MS64-65 doesn't look FS in the scan
46D MS65 looks like it may be FS from the scan
43S MS64 if that mark by the mm is on the coin, MS65 if it's not. Looks like it may be FS to me from the scan

                Nice coins.

              • How can you tell how many steps there are from those scan?

Just curious! Maybe I need your monitor

I am not really up on what it takes to make the full step status. Can someone expain it to me or post a link that shows pictures? thank you mike

I can't see the steps, so I'll just do the grades.

                1. MS67
                2. MS66
                3. Has attributes of a MS66, but those marks near the MM would probably knock it down to a MS65 or lower.

              • The '38-D looks like it has very good luster so should be better than gem. Its scan looks nicer than the '46-D. The war nickel looks pretty nice too with few marks.

The steps do look flat from the images.

Even if the '38-D goes 67 it would cost less than $100.

Do check the mint mark closely on the '46-D. I believe there is a D over D and also a D over S. If you have one of those that coin would be worth something!

Please take my input with a grain of salt. I don't know much about circulating strike Jeffs.

                Looks like...

MS66 (Although it looks like there is some rub or friction on the high cheek, I can't tell for sure)
MS65/66 (cheek is slightly dimpled, which seems to keep the coins from 66 these days)
MS64/65 (most likely a 65, although the lack of depth to the jaw and possible friction in front of face could keep it from gem)

Hard to tell from scans, but none of them look fs...looks like the usually bridge below the 3rd quadrant.

Lucy thanks for the nice diagram! I remember in the early days of the full step designation there was alway's talk of the steps being judged in increments such as 5, 5 1/2, 6 is this method still used or is it just full step or not full step these days? The 38-D is is almost flawless and it has a nice light even gold tone that really makes it look nice. mike image

Mikey - I'll defer to the experts - but I have a couple of MS67's and these look just as good image
