rec'd '03 Silver Eagle Proofs/w/DD

The new West Point Proof issues came with double dates and much other doubling I see under the scope on the obv. Have the dies been changed to eliminate this, or do I think I have a rare breed here? I hope for the later. Appreciate any comments.
TIA

More than likely it's machine doubling. How did you get them so quick? I couldn't get into the website to order until yesterday. image
  • I went to the mint site, registered, and ordered them last weekend. They supposedly were to be available April 2. Rec'd them yesterday. They are absolutely georgeous.

How'd you get them before someone that used their subscription service?

Any "doubled die" on a 1998 or later coin is theoretically impossible, since the Mint has employed a "Single squeeze" method of die production since that time. Multiple hubbings are required to produce any doubled die. Anything after this date that shows "doubling" is undoubtedly machine, mechanical, or strike doubling.
(These terms are different names for the same type of "doubling.")

imageI ordered 5 on the 2nd and got them in this mornings mail! Haven't had a chance to check them over yet, but at first look they are stunning!image Who would think snail mail was that quick. Ordered them standard, but were shipped priority for 3.95, which was the standard rate!

  • koynekwest---upon further review, even the tops of her toes are struck oddly with strong doubling. Sorry no pics available yet, but when I add that, I will be happy to attach.

Remember- proofs are struck multiple times... it is possible that the coin shifted ever so slightly that only some parts on the edges were actually doubled, and the other parts just refilled by the dies (the heat of a die will melt the coin as the metal fills the crevices of the design).

I wonder how they determine when they send them out, I have used the subscription since last year and always get them later than everyone else.
