circulation finds

I don't go through large numbers of rolls like some members do, but, yesterday I did get one single roll of nickels at the bank, and did find one War Nick. Today, in seven cents change, I got a broadstruck 2000P Lincoln. The coin is in UNC/AU, but has flecks of copper coating mising from the zinc core. I am assuming that this is common due to the lame material in the zinc cents and the stress from being broadstruck. Am I right, or is this odd?

Cool finds. Your assumption about stress to the thin copper plating sounds good to me.

I score War nickels pretty often, and hit a large multiroll hoard of 40% Kennedies last year. Fun, ain't it?

Very fun. I posted on this before, but I'll tell the tale again. I always ask for rolls of halves at my bank. They never have any. One day, the sexy, nice teller says that she has some. I take one roll back to my office, and they are mostly 40% silver clads. I return to the bank and get the other six rolls. out of seven rolls, I get 39 silver clads, six or so '64s, and two EX/AU franklins.

I also pick-up a couple rolls of halves whenever I visit my bank. I don't know why but I'm partial to the bicentennials. Strange thing with the 1997s' I revieved in a roll today though, I got four that have very clear die grinding marks on them, I've never noticed this before, it's probably common but I've never noticed this.
Does anyone know how many strikes the die would go through before the polishing/grinding marks are obliterated?

  • My wife has come to the point where she always looks through the cash drawer at her work looking for good finds for me. Just last week she found a war nickel, two silver dimes and a silver quarter. The dimes and quarter she was excited to find, but she actually finds war nickels about two times a month.
  • Everyone will find one of these soon, but I found my first 2003-D dime this week.image
The strangest things seem suddenly routine.

The teller that scored me those 40% Kennedies was very nice, too.

But most definitely NOT sexy! image

She'd remembered me being a coin nerd on the basis of a two-minute conversation two months earlier. I was impressed.

(I offered to buy her lunch, but she refused).

There is a special place in heaven for friendly bank tellers, sexy or not. image

I haven't found anything decent in change for 20 years, except for a war nickel recently. Before that the last I found was a couple silver coins when I worked in a retail establishment in the mid 80s. My wife also got a hacked up Mercury in change not too long ago. But there is not a whole lot out these unless you actively check a lot of rolls or work in retail. The "hit rate" seems best on checking half dollar rolls.
  • Good finds. Wheaties show up quite often in change as well as the occasional
War Nickel. I used to work with a guy in the 1980's nicknamed Silver John. Every
year around Christmas he would take 2 weeks vacation and go to Florida. While
his wife hit all the flea markets he would go to the bank and get $500 in rolls of
halves. He never failed to come back without a nice sack of 40% and several 90%
halves. I tried that locally but my bank does not accept rolled coins, they have to
be loose and go through the counter. They are then wrapped in clear plastic, so
you can see the rims and the silver coins show up easily. I guess I will have to
try different banks until I find one that accepts rolled coins from customers.

Check small stores that use coins from vending machines to stock the register.

You might want to ask if you can buy one of the bags that come directly off of their counting machine before they roll the coins (it is best to do this at a bank in a neighborhood where a lot of elderly people reside). Be forewarned though, the quarter and dime bags hold $1,000.00 face worth of coins, and you may find it nearly impossible to return them to a bank without paying a handling charge. I buy my bags from a different bank than the one I have my account with then I return them to my bank as they do not charge as long as I deposti the total into my account.

  • Thanks Jim for the info. I'll check it out locally and see what ends up in the
grandkids inheritance. At worst it will keep me away from the boob tube.

I find lots of tough coins in circulation. If you're looking for indian cents and buffalo
nickels then you're not going to find much. If you're looking for silver then you'll need
to stick with half dollars. But if you're looking for scarce, high grade, or unusual coins
made within the last forty years then there is some great hunting and some great coins
out there. Get the Cherrypickers guide, the books on the currently circulating coins and
some blue folders. In forty rolls of quarters you'll find a complete clad set. Sure a lot of
the coins will be in sorry shape, but after only another forty rolls it will start looking pretty
good. You'll also be finding common, scarce, and rare varieties. Even some of the com-
mon ones are pretty tough in nice XF or better. Dimes are a more difficult set because
many of the older ones despite their higher mintages are hard to find. Nickels are good
because there are some very old ones available too. Cents are getting almost impossible.
The high attrition rate make many of the memorial cents virtually impossible to locate. There
are lots of varieties in these though.

I got a very well struck 82-D XF/AU quarter just today among 5 rolls of quarters.
The only keepers though were an 81-D AU and a '03 Illinois (D).
