Capped Bust Dime Question

I Recently purchase an 1829 capped bust dime from Mike at Whitlow for my type set. When I got it, I notice the holder said medium. In looking at the price guide, I see there are 4 types of the 1829 dimes, small, medium, large, and curled. Is the medium the most common? Is there any price difference between the types?

Thank you.

Greg

I can't answer your question, but that coin is a keeper. Nice collectable piece!

    Greg,

Curled Base 2 is reference the 2 in the Date. What you have is called Square Base 2 (I believe). I'm not sure what the market value is currently for the Curl Base 2, but I feel it's safe to say you could sell one in Good for $1000.

Small, Medium, and Large reference 10c on the reverse. I'm not sure about price differences here. Although I don't think there's much, if any.

    Edited to add:

    Sweet coin!

Your coin is probably "Variety 12" of 1829 dimes because obverse stars 8 and 9 appear to be "close" to me. If "10C" is really medium size, your coin is an example of Variety 12, of 12 total for 1829, according to Davis.

"Rarity: R-3. A scarce variety that can be found in VF-20 or better condition. Possibly six pieces exist in MS-60 or better condition. Finest seen is MS-65 (Private sale by Bowers & Ruddy Galleries, Aug. 5, 1976)."

Very nice 1829 dime, Typetone. Is at least MS-60? Looks to me to be unc or very close to unc.

    Mr 1874:

The coin is graded PCGS MS64. The medium date seems to be more scare than the small date according to the PCGS pop report, but I'm not sure whether the designation is new, and all the coins have not come in for designation review yet.

Yours appears to be the medium type.

This one is mine and is a small 10C variety

The small 10C is the "most prevalent" according to Davis. Variety 7, which your dime definitely isn't, is the most common 1829 in grades of extra fine and higher.

Your dime is definitely Variety 12.

I would say your coin is worth a premium as a variety 12 especially in the MS-64 grade. How much of a premium depends on the Bust dime specialist's interest in acquiring this variety for his collection.

Can't really help beyond this to help you price your lovely original toned piece, Typetone. image

    Tonetype

The capped bust design is one of my favorites and your coin is an outstanding example with what looks to be accented by some very nice toning.

    Greg,

My honest opinion is that there is very little if any premium. Since the coin came from me, I can tell you I did not charge any premium for the variety. This may matter to the variety collector, however, I'm not sure to what extent in pricing. That coin is really nice Greg, and for a 64 has great eye-appeal. Nice to see it again.

MS70 - I thought I had a really nice 1829 bust dime. . .but it came back from PCGS in a body bag (the very coin pictured) for cleaning.

    Here is the obverse. . . .

Draco - This is what I don't like about the "Bodybag" Your coin may have been cleaned, but so what! In this case the coin does not seem to have been seriously altered - it's still a beautiful nice condition coin. Send me all bodybagged coins that look like yours and I would be happy. From the picture it does not appear to have been whizzed or even excessivly dipped IMHO.

    Typetone -- fabulous coin!

Draco -- I agree with oldshep. It is unfortunate that bodybags seem to create a class of "untouchables" Your coin is perfectly desirable and a wonderful piece of history, regardless of whether PCGS will slab it.
