  • What makes you think someone is hoarding them?

  • Are you referring to slabbed unc. NJs, or raw? There is a huge difference as you probably know.

Most of what PCGS has called unc. are what the EAC boys (I think you're one of them, aren't you?) would call AU.

In any case, I know where most of the slabbed and raw ones are.

I have two Uncs and two proofs. Does that count as a hoard?

hey singapore, your right about eac vs pcgs. are you a eac'er? the last issue of penny-wise showed a fascinating statistical analysis of pcgs grading vs. eac, & the gist of it is that pcgs grades average 2 grades too high. the analysis also showed that, for the particular population of a few hundred large-cents in question, EVERY eac AU coin was graded UNC by pcgs. curiously though, there were a few isolated example of pcgs giving a more conservative grade than eac.

my personal experience is that pcgs does an incredibly awful job of grading colonials, just about beyond belief, but i digress.

to the subject of this thread, it's not like i could afford 1 or anything, but i've been told that there's a well-heeled fella hoarding every unc nj that hits the market, & i'm guessing that he's oblivious to whether it's a pcgs unc or a raw unc, he's buying all of 'em. i was just wondering why someone would attempt this, & if anyone knows why.

kinda reminds me of that doctor-dude that was trying to corner the market on 93 lib-caps - he got slammed in the end & lost a lot of $ (again, so i undersand).

uh, 1 last thing, i'm referring of course to n-j coppers, not state-quarters

    Suddenly, this thread makes sense.
  • I'm not an EACer. I am a colonial collector. I agree with you re PCGS grading of colonials vs EAC standards (see my recent post in the Q/As on this topic).

There are at least 5 or 6 and perhaps as many as 25 well-heeled collectors that would try to buy any legitimately unc. NJ copper that came on the market and would pay large amounts of money for them.

I am not aware of any 1 person who is 'cornering' the market, though several individuals own a lot of them and are in a sense competing to assemble the 'finest known' collection of NJ coppers.

I am not aware of anyone attempting to corner the market of PCGS slabbed NJ coppers, nor would I recommend this to be a good idea.

Email me and I'll respond to you tonight.

  • Hey Dorkkarl I just love the replies about the NJ quarters!!!

The largest holding of NJ coppers is, of course, in NJ. Oh yea, the same collector also has the best second and third collections (look out - the whole shebang could hit the market in the forseeable future!) . But no one collector is hoarding ALL the unc or near unc New Jerseys - I know of several kick butt collections.

As for the NJ quarters they're worth $0.25 each.

Yes, you did fool me. I really did think you were talking about the new state Quarter. I still think the title and question were ambiguous.

  • The collection(s) was/were begun in the 1930's by the current owner's father and has/have been added to ever since. The current owner has suffered some serious health setbacks lately and I doubt (but who knows?) that his son will retain the collection should his father pass away. BTW: there's a whole lot more there than New Jersey's.

Offhand I can think of at least 4 additional major players for unc New Jerseys - one who lives in both Calif and NJ, two in New York and one in Seattle.
