1969 Chamberlain just went for $5,000. psa 9

Sheesh...smr 850.00

This particular buyer has been buying every high dollar basketball
card this month. Several of the Topps Vault uncut sheets and other
really great stuff, but it seems there is no limit to what he'll pay.
Kind of wacky.

    That is insane. image
  • If I recall, the psa 9 69' Frazier rookie went for more than twice than what the chamberlain went for...
1969 topps basketball in psa 8 and particularly in psa 9's have consistiently sold well above smr for as long as I have been registered on eBay.

The SMR is way out of wack on 1969 Topps Basketball in PSA 8 and 9. Try finding any of the Hall of Famers at SMR prices in PSA 8.
A Chamberlain PSA 7 yesterday closed at $170 which is above SMR.
I have noticed the prices in PSA 7, are usually accurate but a little bit high in the SMR.

Also realize that bidder #3 was in at only $2,001 -- so you basically had two people driving the price into the stratosphere.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

Does this mean someone paid over ten thousand dollars for a PSA 9 Frazier? People could do what they want with their money but that sounds unreasonable. While the SMR is not in line with reality, I doubt these prices will hold. Aren't there still a lot of unopened product out there for 1969 basketball?

One dealer has unopened packs available for $425/pack.
Another dealer has a psa 8 checklist (very tough card) available
    for 4,000.00

Take a look at the bidding: the lead bidder had another bid in that topped his 5K+ bid, just in case someone went higher. Whoa.
  • Dhjacks,
Can you let me know which dealer has 1969 Basketball packs for sale? I have been looking for one. You can either post the dealers name here or send me an email.
    Thanks,

  • I will email the original seller to confirm my wild allegation that the psa 9 frazier went for $10,000+ I don't want whatever credibility I have or that I am capable of to lessen...
in any case, '69 topps basketball has long sold over smr...
I know smr is only a guide and that eventually things begin to average out... however, many examples have long sold well over smr consistiently...
I am also extremely interested in finding out where I can get unopened 1969 BK for $425... please email me through my profile.
    Thanks,
    Geoff
  • ok... I checked with the original seller and I was way off on that frazier... it went for $1,500~
I'll stop smoking those bananna peels now...
lickin' iguanas... whatever... I thought I had that right.
in any case... I still don't think $5,000 is crazy for a psa 9 chamberlain from that particular set...
It would be crazy for someone like me who lives on a teacher's salary to pay $5,000 for any card... but If I had tons of money to spend on basketball cards, a psa 9 1969 #1 Chamberlain would be high on my list... and if money were no object as is the case with some collectors... I would pay whatever it took to win a psa 9 frazier rookie ;-)

The 69-70 packs are offered by Hoop-heaven.com.
They also have the Rulers set and trios sets for sale. Good stuff. The packs are listed at $450. (not 425.) . I've not dealt with these guys, so I can't say anything about them good or bad.

  • Chamberlain's PSA 9 at $5k isn't surprising when you consider what '69 PSA 9 BSKT have been going for on e-bay during the past several months. I recall a PSA 9 of Jim Washington of all people went for $685 even though SMR has it at $75. Most cards are selling 200-300% over SMR on E-bay with PSA 9's selling nearly 500% of what SMR has as the price. The notable exception being Alcindor's rookie which actually has sold for about 75% of SMR in PSA 8 condition on a couple occasions a few months back. The high bidding has been driven up by a few collectors trying to upgrade their sets for the registry. Anyone following the '69 BSKT knows them. Regardless, it underscores how truly rare these tall boys are.
  • That 1969 set is still undervalued and I can see why prices are sky-high. You only have a few premium collectors and they're fighting for all the high grade cards. If basketball ever gets tons of collectors (maybe from guys who believe there's just too much to collect in baseball), perhaps the prices will go down.
