Anyone have a genuine 3 legged 37d Buff to show.

There was a thread started about a counterfeit possible on ebay with several die characteristics provided and I thought it would be good to put a picture up to put some visuality for us visual people. I had also heard that the best way to tell was that the neck of Mr. Indian was rough and/or bumpy...is that true as well. All Buffalos look rough and bumpy, so what is the difference?

thanks

  • Another point is that the beard is longer on one side compared with the other. The small feather on the bottom is slightly worn off on one side.

Just for fun here is one that is fake. Not a very good job. It didn't even fool me.
  • By the rough neck, they mean it is not smooth. Kinda like flow lines.

Here is a thread I posted on Three Legged Buffaloes a while back. It includes some diagnostics which should be of some help. :

  • Here's the link to my NGC Registry coin MS64 1937-D 3-leg Buffalo......killer eye appeal rainbows.....courtesy of Adrian, of course! The "diagnostics" are very easy to see on this coin. (be sure to click on the coin to enlarge it!). Most noticable the trail of metal below the Bison's, er, Bisonhood to the ground in what appears to be him getting some relief! Also note the tell-tell "moth eaten" rear leg, of which a similiar area appears on the obverse on the Indian's neck.

    Please.....no drooling on 'da coin!

  • I'm not a buffalo guy but I have to jump in here. Who in his/her right mind would buy an unslabbed one of these based on a scan? Further, the seller doesn't specialize in coins but sells any and all types of collectibles. Return policy? - Not specified in the auction listing, at least I couldn't find it.

I'm not implying the seller is dishonest but probably is passing along an altered coin the she unknowingly got stuck with. We always try to protect newbies here but c'mon - sometimes they can't be saved from themselves!!

My guess is that even a buffalo specialist would have to have this coin in hand to authenticate it (or not) and someone is paying $320 for it! I have a feeling we are seeing a ripoff and I don't like it but then again, as W.C. Fields said, "Never smarten up a chump!"
