Which Big auction venue is really the best?

If you were going to sell a very nice coin collection, which auction venue do you believe would realize the highest prices, i.e, good strong attendance, big money buyers, etc.? I've considered selling a lot of my collection; keeping only the pieces that I have a strong emotional attachment to. I might do a test on ebay, but there is so much crap to wade through, I believe it wouldnt be a prudent use of time or energy. I feel a sight seen venue would really be an advantage. Any thoughts?

Heritage, Heritage and Heritage in that order.

Have you had a look at the auction catalog for the Santa Clara show. Yawn and ho hum so as to not mention names.
The most money I made are on coins I haven't sold.

a collection of what? if copper, i'd go eac. if bust halves, i'd go bhnc. if colonials, i'd go 4-c. everything else, about your only choices are heritage, b&m, superior or goldberg.

ebay's not a realistic choice for a real collection, imo

  • Heritage, maybe B & M. I'd avoid Superior [see the current Santa Clara auction for reason why]. I'd also avoid Goldberg for reasons previously posted.

Edited to add: Try using ebay first. You never know who is out there. Also how about the Buy Sell Trade board here? I never see super nice stuff there so I assume others assume it won't sell here. Try it, it's free and you may be surprised.

Sorry if this has been asked before but, what are the problems with Goldbergs auctions? I have watched these companys for quite a few years and for the type of coins I want or would sell Goldberg always seemed the right one for me. I think each company has its strengths and weaknesses. I have not seen anything on these boards about Goldberg. Maybe I just had my head buried in the sand.

Ebay is #1. You will get the best prices, but will have to do the work yourself. The only major pitfalls are poor listings and poor photographs. Both of these will discourage bidders.

Heritage #2. In the last 10 years or so, they have grown to be the dominant coin auction company. They handle everything, but take more fees. Lesser coins tend to get lost in the stars which can be a problem if you have a lot of mediocre coins. The Long Beach show is generally the best in my opinion.

I wouldn't even consider anyone else.
