Ethical dilemma? Not for me.

BarryBarry Posts: 10,100 ✭✭✭
Browsing Ebay, I came across this, which looks like a nice coin. The seller's id looked familiar, so I looked at his other listings.
Thought to myself, "Oh yeah, one of those sc*mbag ACG dealers." Should I bid? Nope, not me. I don't care how nice a coin it is.

  • he has 99.8% posative feedback and the coin is in a PCGS slab. I dont see the problem.

Very simple Klector. I won't do business with someone whose makes a substantial portion of his living by deception. Maybe he has so few negs because the folks that buy his ACG and PCI coins have no idea what they're buying.

and your point would be.........."i'll show you, i'll hurt me."??? if you like the coin i fail to see why you wouldn't bid on it just because the seller lists coins graded by ACG. perhaps in the future we'll have links with a sellers political or religious affiliation to help us determine who we should avoid.image

It is interesting to note that all of his auctions titles contain the name of the grading company except for the ACG slabbed coins, where it says only "certified". It's obvious he knows he's selling garbage.

I agree with the ACG stuff, but don't regarding PCI. I use PCI and will buy PCI off of eBay along with selling them.

There's still wiggle room on the legit scale with them- at least for me.

    OK baseball

i'll give you that one. i went on a quick sarcastic tear. apologies to all. BUT...........just because someone sells ACG holdered coins doesn't necessarily make them a scourge to the hobby. heck, i don't even think it means they support the company. on the other hand, if someone were an ACG submitter, it would ring differently.

for instance, the local dealer has a few ACG coins in his case. he also has some obscure "paper and plastic bag holdered" coins from the late 70's to early 90's--------ANACS and ANICS. i don't think it makes him a bad dealer and i don't think it means he supports them. he readily admits the coins aren't that nice but when he buys a collection, he buys the whole thing.

the seller at hand may be different. but the coin is the thing, whether your a whore or not!!image

This same seller has the nerve to offer items like this without the mention that it just may be ever so lightly cleaned. Heck, he says it's a lovely coin so it must be. Actually has a whole string of them. image

I just see people like that and assume that anything they are selling is the complete bottom of the barrel no matter whose holder their coins happen to be in. Whether they sell ACG or not, the message is loud and clear.

It seems to me that if you bid on good coins, PCGS or NGC slabbed and ignored the ACG coins the seller would soon find that the junk slabs just don't sell. That is self regulating,I believe.

    But what do I knowimage

  • Tough crowd and tough subject, folks.

I had to sell the one and only ACG slab I ever bought. But that was a long time ago, and the buyer was well-informed as to my real opinion on the coin. I realize this is not exactly the same thing as a long-time ACG seller, but I think one must look a little larger to see if they are profiteering, or just misguided.

Baseball - No problem with your words. You expressed my feelings very well.

Russ - This guy's been seliing ACG for years. I guess he's one of the "loyal few" who hasn't switched to NTC.

Braddick - I have no problem with the old PCI slabs. As a matter of fact, I try to find them, as often a great deal can be had. However, this guy just sells the gold slabs. I sense a pattern it that...

I put up a PCI slab awhile back halfheartedly thinking that nobody in the world would buy it. I was very wrong...It's got 11 bids so far and it's still moving!
Apparently, there are collectors out there who don't follow this forum...hard to believe. Twowood

Twowood, you're closer to the coin, so you would know: Is this not a 1921 Peace in XF? It sure looks like it and if so, the price it's at now, in or out of anyone's holder, sure seems fair. No?

Braddick; You're right. It's graded EF45 and I think it would make that grade by any reasonable grader. My point in the post is that there seems to be a sizeable body of people out there who buy AGC, PCI and other lower rung graders regardless what these forum folks say about those services. Twowood
