Does this look like a shill to you guys?

RussRuss Posts: 48,514 ✭✭✭
Registered on eBay for over two years and zero feedback. The only thing he's bid on in the last 30 days is another auction by the same seller. He bid the last day on that one also, and it was also well below market when he bid (and didn't win).

Could be, but not enough data points to say for sure.
  • I'd say the odds are pretty good.

Well, if it is, at least this seller makes judicious use of the tactic.

I'll reserve judgment until the auction ends in a little while image , and I can see what his bid was.image

Looks like it to me too, but time will tell, I think.

As you said, the bidder has bid only 2 times in the last 30 days and both were on this seller's auctions. However, both auctions were for HIGH quality PCGS DCAM coins. I watched that auction for the '74 cent and a single bid of $250 was very conservative for a shill bidder. The coin was a buy at that price.

    LINK

I definitely wouldn't want to label the bidder a shill. He looks more like a bargain shopper of high quality, low Pop., PCGS DCAM coinage.
  • I agree that if he bids very conservatively he may not be a winner on any auctions. But continually bidding on the same buyer and never winning looks suspicious.
  • Well, your shill bidder won. Should we see if he gets any feedback? I wish there was a way to find out if the transaction goes through. Maybe the seller will relist it.

Was that buy (if it was one) a bargain, about right, or sky-high?

The answer to that question would play heavily in forming my opinion whether it was a disguised reserve bid, or a real one.

It was a bargain. Last one that sold on eBay went for $1699, but it was a better coin, and the market has softened since then. Recent Teletrade has been in the $1000 range.

  • I have bought from Coin-slinger(Alex) before I thought he was quite honest and fair. He was always on the up and up I dont think he would do something like this. First this is his livelyhood he and his wife run this EBAY store and I doubt very much that he is going to jeopradize all of that for something as noticeable and silly as shill bidding. In fact you might hear from him as I know he is a member of this board.image

Which, of course, excuses him from any scrutiny.

    Bigern,

Sorry, that wasn't really directed at you; but rather what sometimes seems to be the prevailing attitude here.

What the heck am I missing guys?

    Redbook for a '64 is $4 MS63, $8 PR65, and a whopping $20 PR65 accented hair.

  • Russ - Do not think this was a shill. I looked over the bid history and do not know any of these to be part of a shill.

I will say that it is rare to find a DCAM Accent Hair and the price seem about right to me.

    satootoko,

What you're missing here is the fact that PCGS has only graded a total of 54 of these in Deep Cameo at any grade level, and that pop has increased by only two in the last year, with the coin in this auction being one of those.

Perhaps you can let him know that accusations have been made about his auctions. I'm sure he would appreciate the opportunity to defend himself.

  • Hi,
My name is Alex Cyphers, and I am seller "coin-slinger" on e-bay. Upon reading the first few comments directed towards my auctions, I have to admit I was little surprised by the accusations. However, after reading them all, I would like to thank all of you that stood up and spoke out about your dealings with me in the past and gave note to your positive expereinces. As far as the Schill bidding accusations, I would like to direct you to check this auction out as an example: 3016570833. You will notice that their is a 0 feedback bidder on this one also (it's not me image. I actually get 0 feedback bidders quite often, and most the time they turn into great customers. Everyone is entitled to their opinion on this, and it is not my intention to start a war of words. I hate to lose any customers or have anyone out their think that I am not on the up and up. Any and all readers of this, please feel free to e-mail or call me with any questions regarding this subject.

    Thanks for your time!

    Alex,

HMM...it looks like your buyer decided to list the coin on Teletrade.

    Or, maybe it was returned?

Well, that's a bummer. The buyer lost money selling the coin on Teletrade. Buys it on eBay for $785 and, judging by the glowing feedback, LOVES the coin - then turns right around and sells it on Teletrade for $775. Poor guy, must have had some unexpected financial need.
