What happened to the silver dollars?

The ones with the draped bust and small eagle? I find 1795 FLOWING HAIR specimens all over (well, not quite) and heraldic eagles, too.

But mid-grade 1795-1798 small eagles? Where?

Seems they are all either holed slicks or XF-AU.

Anyone know an answer? Doesn't make sense that the befores and afters should exist in Fine and Very Fine, but not the middle years.

Most profess to LIKE the big bird coins better for esthetics and the flowing hair.....well...it just IS.
but......

?????????

you've pointed out a good way to tell if a coin is under/overvalued. of course the mid-grade coins are there, just not being offered. that's a good hint that collectors feel those are a good value compared to what they could sell them for.

on the flip-side, look at the amount of PCGS 69 coins being offered. EBAY is flooded with them. Collectors feel the money they'll bring is worth more than the coin.

    nwcs.....see?

That's what I mean. Not ONE draped/sm eagle in the batch.

baccaruda.......My plans are to dump all my bust and seated dollars and "invest" in MS69 and 70 modern proofs. I like ......RARE.....stuff.

Whoops. My age should allow me some senility.

My experience is from years of reading everything on coins and one that I never forgot:

Wish I could remember whom to credit for the advice. It was:

"Never buy any coin less than 10 years old."

And from what I learned over the years..........Trust a market that has earned trust.

Buy what you like, but look out for fads and promos.
