Tough call -- they look like twins. I think I'd go for the one on the left -- the blue backround seems cleaner (there's a print spot to the L of his R ear in the one on the right...but, talk about splitting hairs!)
Brighter overall -- with the white and the blue background. The scan on the one on the right shows what appears to be the faintest grease-type spot near the upper right corner of the card. Could just be the scan -- but it could be on the card, too. Also, the one on the right has a darker blue dot in the sky -- tracing directly from the left of Clemente's right ear. It's a tiny little nit-picky thing, but I stil noticed it.
Finally, the example on the left seems to have a much brighter and fuller magenta around Clemente's name. The one on the right might have the tiniest little dot or two on it.
The example on the right seems to have a slightly slightly better l/r centering, but overall both are very very nice examples, and I would be happy with either. I choose the one on the left.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
Card on the right has better registration and a more natural looking color. Yellow if shifted slightly down on the card to the left. This can be best seen in the area just above the black line at the bottom. The right is white. The left is yellow. The best place to see how well registered a card is in the clarity of the whites in their eyes. Card on the left does have a kind of nicer looking stronger blue, but this also makes his face look much darker than what I would consider normal looking like the one on the right. The right does have a small spot 1/4" below the name circle but it might just be on the plastic. The holder on the left is banged up pretty good, so the hassle of a reholder is probably needed. I'd pick the one on the right.
It's interesting to hear what people base their choices on. Of the cards I collect, many of them are photographic. The #1 most important factor to me is image quality. Then everything else like corners, centering, etc.
Looking at these two cards in this light, they are quite different. The one on the left is much darker. Look at his face. It is easiest to see the difference when you look at his forehead. Choosing then becomes a matter of personal preference.
I think most people would prefer the one on the left based on image quality. They are both incredible and I personally like them about the same, although one is definitely darker.
A 1969 PSA 10 #50 Clemente card would be nice to own and would be considered a real challenge compared to the PSA 9 version which is quite plentiful. Is $6-7K a reasonable price? The card is not challenging in PSA 8 or PSA 9 because it tends to have reasonable centering, it was double printed and it is in the first series. The PSA 10 #100 Aaron brought $10,868 in the Superior auction last year despite being in the first series, but this card is difficult to find even in PSA 9. In contrast, the PSA 10 1969 #95 Johnny Bench (also 1st series) brought $1200-$1400 about 3 years ago [This is a ballpark, I can't remember the specifics] and this card is not extraordinarily hard to locate in PSA 9 either. I would consider a PSA 9 Reggie Jackson to have broader appeal and to be more difficult find in a true "PSA 9" version compared to the PSA 10 Clemente. The Jackson rookie in the recent Mintxpress auction is a true "PSA 9" in my opinion and it closed out at a little over $5,000.
This is kind of like do you want the blond supermodel on the left in a blue dress or the blond supermodel on the right in a red dress... Both are very nice cards.... Personally Ilike the one on the left just ever so slightly more....
Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass... it's about learning to dance in the rain.
Naah, I'm not buying. It was just an interesting auction and I was curious which one everyone preferred. I agree that the left one's color is slightly deeper. His forehead is defined a little better than the right one and it may or may not have slightly better centering. Mitochondria (are you in cellular research?) brough up the main point: is it worth what the guy is asking? That's probably better answered by the number of '69 collectors here. For a card that has a pop of 2 and whose market is cornered by this guy, he pretty much can ask what he wants. If I didn't think many more '69 Clementes were going to be graded a 10, yes, I'd probably buy it. However, if 9s are really plentiful, are the odds good that there are more 10s out there waiting to be graded? Time will tell.

I noticed that too. Hmmm. However, the cards do look gem and don't appear to be "skinny". But I would ask the question if I were considering to purchase one. I did ask about a certain PSA 9 currently up for auction and got the reassurance. But the holder definitely looks damaged in the scan. I won't mention which auction though since I don't want to publicly pan someone's auction without knowing for sure the card has a problem.

My two cents,

I like the one on the right. But then again the one on the left looks so good also. Oh, heck I will take both of them.

Are you going to buy one of them?
I'll generally go for the card with the most vibrant color in an A vs B comparison,
which would be the card on the left.
However, in this case, when I cover up one card,
and examine the other one independently,
the card on the right is a clear standout to my eye.
Afterall, don't we generally just look at one card at a time anyway ?
