Which causes greater downgrade of points in MS coins?

Good evening from the East coast!

Do hits to the devices and fields cause more loss of grade than (don't know the correct term here...) surface chatter (where coins have rubbed together in a flat way as to lightly abrade the device and rim surfaces)?

That's a really tough question to answer. The concept is mostly degree and a little bit location. So a big mark is worse than a little bit of abraisions, but lots of abraisions are worse than a small mark. As for location, center is the worse, so a mark on the face of a Morgan dollar, for example, might be worse than two marks in the field that were close to the hair and harder to see.

Sorry if the answer seems vague...but the concept is somewhat subjective.
