Attention Roosie Collectors

Today marks the first day that PCGS will begin adding the Full Band designation on the Roosevelt dime series.

Dimes added to your Roosevelt dime sets on or before March 11, 2003 are eligible for a free review through June 30, 2003.

The coins should be submitted under our “Designation Review” service, normally $10, but PCGS will waive the charge for Registry Set holders of record as of March 11, 2003. The receiving department has a list of those set holders, and will accept coins from those sets for a free FB review. Please remember though, that you will be responsible for return postage.

Population figures for FB Roosevelts begin with the September, 2003 population report.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

I've seen all the announcements in the papers about pcgs starting the FT designation. It would be an "op" to create and place corrective press to specify that FB has been adopted.
Also, is FB really going to add TWO points to the reg??? ONE POINT IS CERTAINLY ENOUGH! This should be corrected as well!!!
  • BJBJ Posts: 393 mod
    RegistryCoin,

Not sure where you heard that 2 bonus points would be added, but that is incorrect information. Bonus points will depend upon the coin, similar to the way the Mercury dime bonus points are determined.

Mike Sherman posted a notice on the PCGS website using the terminology "Full Band." I believe that notice is still online.

    COOL.

I read in either CW or NN, or both, that the reg. points would be the same as FS and FBL. I am glad that they will not be the same, as roosies' are not comparable, ie., an ms66 roosie that gains an FB designation cannot be equal in the registry to an ms68 without the designation. You can see that we have a coin sold for $30 lately, gaining the same reg. points as a coin that sells for at least 200x that. The last pcgs ms68 roosie on ebay, a couple of months ago, had a reserve of $8500, I believe. Thanks for the comment.

Do we have to list every coin and the tag number on the submission form?. Between the silver and clad sets I have over
    100 dimes to send in.

Can we also start sending in our non registry Roosevelts for designation review at this time?. We pay the fee of course.
  • onlyroosiesonlyroosies Posts: 3,300 ✭✭✭✭
BJ, Whats the turnaround time for designation review?.
  • BJBJ Posts: 393 mod
You will need to fill out the submission form just like any submission, so yes, you will need to list all the coins.

I'll check with PCGS customer service about the turnaround time and post it when I hear back from them.

    BJ,

What about Roosies that are in Type Sets? Are they eligible for free review? I think they should be. image

They are required as a part of the set.

The free designation service is for Roosevelt dime set holders only, i.e. people with a whole bunch of Roosies.

    HELLO BJ:
I have three sets listed in the 1946-1964 series.
Many of the coins in these three sets are there because of "eye appeal".
No consideration was given by me to the fullness of the bands.
I have many duplicate coins in many of these dates/mintmark.
Can I delete a "pretty coin", and add a coin that may qualify for the full band designation? (SAME DATE/MINTMARK). PCGS will not be re-grading any additional coins, but maybe some DIFFERENT coins that what I had registered on March 11.
LMK if this "switch" is O.K.

    Danny,

Unfortunately, no, you can't swap out the coins. PCGS Receiving has the exact inventory that appeared on 3/11/03 and that is what they will be accepting for the free service.

    BJ,

Do I need to call PCGS before sending my dimes in and get a confirmation number or just send them in? Is there a time limit on the grade review on FULL TORCH expiring?

    Thanks, GrandAm

I respectfully disagree with PCGS in regard to the decision to NOT ALLOW
a registry set owner the option to change some coins in his set.
There is NO EXTRA labor involved on the part of PCGS.
What difference does it make to PCGS if a coin I send in is beautifully toned or less eye-appealing(full band). One coin is one coin.
If I send in all 48 coins of each of my three sets, what difference does it make to PCGS if some of the serial #'s are different than what I had registered on March 11. If PCGS was going to impliment this requirement, they at least should have given the registry set owners a few days to make some changes in their set listings.
Please give me a specific reason why PCGS will not allow me to make these changes.

Shouldn't an email be sent to the owners of the sets that are eliglible? Shouldn't this email include the coins they can submit?

If I made changes after March 11th, then I have no ide which coins are which.

What about the $5 attribute/designation service that was offered to ALL collectors when Full Steps was added as a designation for Jefferson nickels?? It makes sense to me to offer this service in order to accurately reflect populations of FB dimes when listed on 9/1/03. What do you think BJ??

    Thanks,

    BJ,

If I have more than 20 coins to submit for 'Designation Review' do I submit them on 2 different invoices? If so, can I get them shipped back to me together to save on postage?
    The impossible just takes longer.

Son of a gunk - Several weeks ago I emailed information to all Roosie collectors and in that email stated that the cutoff was March 11th. Did you not receive that mail? At any rate, another email is going out today.

Tim - Great suggestion. I'll forward it to Mike Sherman and see if he would like to offer the discount on the Roosies.

Tim - Mike Sherman has given the OK for the $5 discount on the designation review service for Roosevelt dimes. So through April 30th, if your dimes don't qualify for the free service (i.e. you don't have Roosevelt dime sets in the Registry), you can send your dimes in for the review service for $5 a coin.

Daniel - Although I really do understand where you are coming from on the coin swapping issue, we had to have a cut-off date for the sets and we needed to do it the day we made the announcement because unfortunately, there are those out there... certainly not you or anyone else posting in this thread, who would load up the registry just to qualify for freebies. These would be people with no intention of maintaining a set and would do it for purely for the greed factor. I am hoping that the $5 discount that is now being offered will be of some consolation.

    Way to go PCGS.

I sent a batch out today for designation review that did not qualify for the free service because
they were not in my set by March 11th. When I totaled the invoice I calculated the $10 per coin cost. I'm sure PCGS
will readjust this........More then fair on the part of PCGS.

Thanks for the response to my question.
I hope I understand the procedure correctly:
    1. All Roosey dimes that I had listed in my Registry sets as of March 11, can be reviewed at no charge.
    2. Any additional Roosey dimes that I would like to have reviewed will cost me $5.00.
    My next question:
Can I send these coins directly to PCGS myself, or do I have to let a "dealer" send them in for me?

Once again I would like to thank BJ for all her work on this matter. I also would like to say that the 10 day turn around time to get your dimes back is exceptionalimage

I can understand with what Danny is trying to do, and I think that if you gave only registry set holders as of 3-11-03 to "adjust" their sets, I don't think that it would make that much difference.

You could tell customerservice to be on the lookout for a certain persons dimes and that this person is only eligible to "re-grade" say 144 dimes as in Danny's case. I don't think that it would matter about which dimes they are, just the # of dimes.

Just trying to lobby for ya Dannyimage

    Thanks again BJ!!!!!!!!

    HELLO PAUL:
I am happy to hear from someone else who shares my feelings.
The "excuse" given by BJ does not make any sense to me as a registry participant. She says they were afraid that others would post some coins on the registry list so that they could get a "free" review.
NOT!!! Only those sets listed on March 11 qualify. Why can't I, at this time, make a few substitutions to my current registry sets?
Why should PCGS care what dimes I send back, so long as I don't exceed my total dimes listed in the registry as of March 11.

Looks like the selling issue isn't the only one where people do not like rules. I suggest PCGS pull the free review, then it would be fair to everyone. Some people just cannot be satisfied.

This was an interesting thread. One of the more important Roosevelt threads actually and I would like to thank Carol and BJ for their tireless work and everything that they do for us collectors.

Also very glad that PCGS went with the FB instead of the FT.

Interestingly enough, Danny Biddle was very unhappy that he didn't have time to adjust his sets for the free review, and to this day has not sent in any of his (3) 100% silver sets, nor his 100% clad set in for designation review. image What would the pops be like if he would have sent in all 500+ silvers and all of his top pop clads?

    What would prices be like?

    Paul:
It brought back many memories when I re-read this thread again.
You are right, I still have not sent in a single Roosey coin of mine to PCGS for full-band review, although I believe I have quite a few.
I am a stubborn son-of-a-gun, and just decided to put all of my Roosies away for a while, back in April 2003.
I guess "a while" has turned into 3+ YEARS!!!!
All i have really done is keep my sets 100% complete each year by adding the current years coins.
I realize that I lost the opportunity to receive the special price from PCGS, but that is my loss.
As i pointed out, many of the coins I have listed in my sets, are listed based on "eye-appeal", not FB.
I have many other Rooseies that possible would grade as FB if PCGS would have allowed me to
change the serial #. This change would have been "after the deadline", so BJ's excuse reply did not "APPLY TO ME".
Nevertheless, I have been searching through my PCGS Roosies (800+) for those that look to be FB. I have found many, hopefully a few
of them will one day help me "get-back" the discounted grading fees I lost out on in 2003 because of my stubborness. HA!!!
I'll send them to PCGS one day!!

    Danny:

Thanks for the update on the 800+ Roosies. You have to realize just how much of a major player you are in having that many Roosies to get re-graded with the FB designation. You have quite a few 68's in the clad series and even if 1-2 were to get the FB, which I think PCGS would have a real hard time doing on a pre '81 clad, it would mean alot. Even your '99 MS69's would be something!

I understand your frustration, and I went through that too. My set went through a huge transformation and is not anywhere near the complete % as it was before the FB. PCGS did it right and if you call DH, BJ, or whomever, they might be so inclined to go and give you that $5 of discount.

I would be willing to say a few words if I knew it would help.

Ya know I have DH's right ear! imageimageimage

not only did you miss out on the lower price, you also missed out on the

'gifts' that were given during the first year - they seem to have tightened up lately (in my biased opinion)

they still have a 'designation review' that is cheaper than regular submissions

Paul you may very well be right with this comment. After all, with 800 mid/top grade Roosies to select from, this could well prove to be close to a "bulk" like submission to PCGS. image
