Shannon PSA 9 Will be a registry card

I posted earlier in the superior auction post but it seemed to have died. I won the Shannon 9. It will be in the registry in my set that is currently number three. I got aggressive on this card for three reasons.
1. I have lost on the Shannon 8,9 and SGC 96 in 6 previuos auctions. I was tired of losing and drew a line in the sand on it. Ego, yes a little but I feel like I got a great card and if I had to slice myself up into the collector/investor group I would say I am 85-90% collector.
2. I felt with the history of this card it belonged in the PSA registry not being crossed into a SGC or Beckett holder, I wanted to make sure of that.
3. If another Shannon never gets the nine grade again I have a card with alot of folklore behind it and it makes a great base for a high grade set. I am currently 91% complete with only 8's and 9's and soon to be a couple tens. Below is a list of the cards I won in the superior auction.
1969 PSA 10's
74 Gomez
89 Gibson

1969 PSA 9's
28 Ryan
110 Shannon
351 Sembera
376 Yankees Stars
624 N.L. Rookies

1969 PSA 8's
157 Rodgers
201 Snyder
267 Romo
287 Tartabull
489 Boyer

1972 PSA 8's
309 Clemente
595 Nolan Ryan

1973 PSA 8
615 Schmidt

1975 PSA 8
223 Yount

All in all it was a good auction for me Ilost on the 67 Horton 10. a couple 69 nines and the 68 Robinson A.S. and Wilhelm 10's
Just a not if any of you 69'ers need a Romo 267 I have a extra 7 and a extra 8 now.

    Stump,

Congratulations! It is a stunning card. I'm very glad that a Registry member won it which means there is one less person to contend with for a future 8 or 9. If any of my prior posts about the price of the card offended you, then I apologize. In years past I've paid some insane prices for cards and some I have regretted while others have stood the test of time as being prudent. If the Pop. of this card stays low, you'll have a very sought after card for years to come. Again, congratulations!

I just paypaled the funds. I left instructions for my ebay guy to take care of it. I slipped out early friday and went to the casino. Had to get away. Anyway your funds are in your account. Thanks for a great card.

    Dude

No offense taken at all. I sometimes wonder the prices people pay for cards. It all depends on the individual and how important the card is. This one has some history to it and I wanted to be part of it.

Congrats on winning the card Dave. I'm glad to see it will be included in our registry. I'm also glad you won the Tartabull. Now it's safe for me to pursue that one! image

    Dave,

Congratulations on the PSA 9 Shannon card. Even if another PSA 9 surfaces, the centering on your card is remarkable for the issue. Good luck in your pursuit for a high grade 1969 set. By the way, thank you for the wonderful Ed Stroud card image

Thanks I felt it important to keep the card in the registry. I am down to 55 cards needed in eight or better. I have all in raw going to PSA in the next week or so. I also have 5 in 7 that I have not registered yet. I will register them when I am 100% PSA complete. Until then I will pursue 8's or better. I also won 12 SGC 88's and 92's from Dhcards that I will crossover including Cash, Oyler, Patterson and Tresh. I am hoping for 8's. I have some snipes on tonight for a couple of the lots but I have spent a little too much this month. Will have to wait for my next bonus to get back in the game. Good luck to all and I will be posting scans soon.

    Dave-

Congratulations on the Shannon.....from a collectors perspective you cannot put a price on a one of a kind card for a set that you love to collect.

    Dave,

Congratulations on winning the Shannon. I didn't think my $80 bid would do it. image

I just looked at the POP Report to see where it stood (7 - 8s and 1 - 9) and happened to notice card #111 Johnny Morris right below it. This card has only 4 graded 8 and 1 graded 9. As you know, I am casually collecting the 1969 set until I finish the 1970 set, but why don't we hear more about that card?

I found 3 of the 4 PSA 8s in the top 5 registered sets. Who has the other 8 and where is the 9?

I am not sure where the rest are. I know I have a nice raw 111 that I am submitting should be a 8 easy. I also have two others that have a chance for 8. Did you look at total submissions? I think the nine is in Dave Reads set. I am not sure.

Couldn't find the nine but also only saw one Shannon 8 in the top ten sets. I dont know the 69's are a weird issue. I know I am having fun building this set and thats what counts. Good luck with your sets.

It must have been miscut to the left to have such nice centering! image

Not to play devil's advocate, but I'm just curious: tell me again why the Shannon has such a following when there are other 1 of 1 PSA 9s in that set.

It's a very tough card due to poor centering. Though others may have as low, or lower pop's, they are just waiting to be submitted. The Shannon pop increased rapidly the past few months due to all the publicity on here and probably at shows. Having searched through dealer inventory for the past 15 years, I never came across a nice Shannon. I eventually found one that was a marginal 8 but it was rejected for miscut (obvious crooked factory cut). The 8 I have in my set was the result of a SGC 92 crossover from DHCards. They've actually supplied most of the 8's as well as this 9. About six months ago, the population was 1 PSA 8 and zero 9s with the first 8 selling for $499 by MintState!

Based on my years of building this set, I think the Shannon, Satriano, Andrews, Duncan, Raditz, Ferraro, Brock and Morris are the toughest cards in the set. There are a few others but those were the ones I always found very OC or always with print snow. The other populations will eventually rise as more collectors/dealers learn they can make $100 grading out those cards.

You are correct with those four. I have the Hershberger in 8 the Kekich in 7 and all four in raw that I am submitting soon. Those four are some toughies. I think this set has alot of tough and semi tough cards. Many more than the 68 set had. I dont want to downgrade the 68's but this 69 set is tough as nails in 8 or better.

Thanks for the reminder Bob. I overlook some because it was relatively easy for me to find a NM-MT example (except the Hershberger) when I was building the set. Had I not been lucky and snagged those, I would view them as tougher to find.
