What percentage of our coins and paper money ends up outside of the country?

Probably a lot of the money that’s minted in the U.S. ends up in other countries. I have a friend that went to Russia a while back, and they wanted American currency badly. Other countries probably also accept American money. Stores in Saskatuan, Canada gladly accept it...

How much of our money leaves the country? Does it cause any problems for us economically when it does? Is it legal to take U.S. money out of the country?

I do not recall the figure (I imagine some one else on the board can supply it), but a remarkable amount of US currency, especially high denomination currency, is held as a store of value outside of the US. As you say, Russia is a popular destination.

There are no export restrictions on US cash, and we benefit marginally from being able to print money that is used by others.
