The best ones to buy are ones that will go up in value. As soon as you figure a surefire way to determine that with any investment, you will no longer need to be concerned about it because your book sales will make you filthy rich.

Don't attempt to re-invent the wheel.
Classic Coinage, either blast white or with natural, attractive toning in GEM grades and/or Classic Key date 20th Century type.

    ANACONDA type coins too.

    -Obviously the stuff I don't buy. . .

  • I like silver anything for investments. Silver hasn't moved as an investment for so long that it's bound to do something.
  • Oh yeah, which coins? Anything that's a key. Just ask my wife. She's pissed!image

I would agree with the "key" approach.

I only collect key dates, but not because of investment reasons, but because i like em" However,

If you buy nice quality key date material (preferably certified by one of the big three services) (or a coin which is certifiable??) your chances are good that you will make a few dollars over the long term. There has been a major move in prices on key date material over the last year or two and short term increases have been sharp and strong. But I dont expect it to continue this strong over this next year due to uncertainty, plus prices are strong right now because of the recent demands.

Therefore, you may not be able to get into the door at a low enough price on nice fresh material to make short term big gains, but over the long term as mentioned you probably will with good stuff????

    JUST MY op
  • jdimmick has a good handle on the stategy of key collecting. As a "collector", I've noticed more movement in the "semi keys" over the past several months. Check out the lincoln 14D or any coin minted in 1921. Some of these have come close to doubling their value in the past year. Just ask my wife. She's getting tired of hearing "I told you so".
  • Foreign gold is best for that spare million or two - you get scarcity for little or no premium to bullion value - a guaranteed winner over the long run. In addition, it'll keep your house on the ground when that freak tornado roars through town.
