The seller cooks every coin he sells. He used to be easyman168, and also uses the handle tonecoin2003. He's been a VERY frequent topic of discussion at this forum. I'm pretty sure this is the first example we've seen around here of one of his coins getting slabbed.
Does retoned necessarily mean artifically retoned?
"The essence of sleight of hand is distraction and misdirection. If smoeone can be convinced that he has, through his own perspicacity, divined your hidden purposes, he will not look further."
Not necessarily...but put the word "cleaned" in front of it, and the implication is pretty strong...along with the pattern of the toning.
Edited to add....had it been "natural" retoning (okay Karl...let loose)...say album toning from sitting in a book post cleaning...I'm betting the "retoning" wouldn't even appear.
That ugly AT look is a rather simple process involving Jewel Luster and ammonia. I'm surprised any reputable service would slab it without stating AT on the insert.
you know what i think? the coin is neither "monster toned" nor "ruined", but simply an interesting and non-ordinary coin, certainly cleaned and probably chemically colored but at fifteen bucks, and what, another 10 to anacs slab, and it's probably worth 25 +/- now, because after all, the coin is what it is.
now if lori goes on ebay and hypes it and starts the auction at 100 or 1000 dollars, that's questionable ethics as well as toning, and I'm sure the watchdogs would call her to task.
if on the other hand she starts it at 99 cents with no reserve, and someone wants to own it, no matter what the "connoiseurs" of monster toning say about the origin of the color, well, buyer beware and caveat emptor and etc.!
she's building a set of toned material that includes a range of types in a range of "artificially to naturally toned" types also, and I respect that, having done the same and enjoyed owning the coins, as long as they looked interesting and the price was right.
did I sink all my money in toners at multiples of sheet? no. Own a few nice pieces? yes And a few colorful, but probably artifical, yet nice for the price pieces? yes indeed!
no question that it's worth more in the slab than not. it is!
Not sure I understand the point here..........is it supposed to be that ANACS was fooled and holdered a poorly cleaned and AT'd coin?
ANACS will holder virtually ANY coin with ANY problem, and note the problem(s) on the holder and downgrade the coin accordingly. In this case, ANACS noted that the coin was cleaned and AT'd, and downgraded the coin to a net AU.....so??
A coin like that would be rejected and bagged in a split second however at PCGS or NGC. BTW.....I think it's a bad practice to patronize people like bbycoin.

Dragon........ I agree and have said this plenty of times. It's deals like this that keep the Docs in business. Some people buy them thinking they are real, then say "I don't care if it's real I like it." When they do indeed care if it's real, they actually got burned.
I guess they might not learn till they step up and pay some big money and really get burned. Then I bet they will care. I guess sometimes us humans need to learn the hard way.
Please... Save The Stories, Just Answer My Questions, And Tell Me How Much!!!!!
I think there may be some confusion as to what "cleaned and retoned" and "artificially toned" means to ANACS. I suspect to find out one would have to talk to a grader and not the customer service person. To me it means that the coin was cleaned and then artificially retoned, they just dont have enough room to say that. If the coin had not been cleaned Lori the coin would have been returned to you as net au55 artificially toned. Im sure of it. Thanks.
In an insane society, a sane person will appear to be insane.

Glad you're having fun, but can't sugar coat my feelings. It's still a Bad coin. IMO

Not always, but mostly, it does.
Either way, sure looks like a $15.00 coin to me. Pre and post ANACS.
