  • Did it say why they net graded the Columbian ???
  • No and I didn't ask. Maybe it will say more when I get them next week or I will call next week after I have the slab in my had.

Really nice group Lori - I'll guess the Columbian has been cleaned - Did you notice the scratch on the proof Franklin before sending it in?

You will find it interesting when it comes back, just how big a scratch ANACS needs to downgrade - PCGS or NGC would have just bodybagged it.

If you do not know why the Columbian was NET graded how do you know it was not for artificial color?
  • Yep, I knew the Franklin had a scratch on it. But it is such an amazing blue color that I wanted it graded anyway.

I know the Columbian is not AT because that is the first thing I asked. She told me it was not graded AT. I have a Morgan they graded a NET MS60 but put Artifically Toned right on the slab. So I am excited about it not being AT. I am sure a lot of you still think it is AT and that is OK. Everyone can have there own opinion.

I think the coin was unc but maybe had some wear on it from handling or something like that. That is all I can think of.

That Columbian may have been cleaned and retoned. If that is correct, that would be why it was net graded.
  • The only problem with you saying possibly cleaned and retoned is they also would have put that on the slab. I had a Peace graded and that is exactly what they put on the slab.

    ANACS EF Details NET VF30
    CLEANED - RETONED

So we will see exactly what the slab says when it gets here and then possibly a call to them for more info.

  • OK,

Called and here is the deal on the Columbian. She did not tell me the first time that it IS Cleaned and Retoned. So that is why it was Net Graded AU55. Still not AT. So that is ok for me.

i was looking at a 1909-S VDB that was up for auction on a local bid board. it was an AU details scratched net EF45 so i wanted to see how bad the scratch was. it took me about a minute to even find the scratch - and you had to be holding it at a certain angle to see it.

  • I have to tell you who I bought that columbian from.

The AT doctor on ebay. I have to say I think all his coins are AT so I am surprised this one passed at ANACS, I thought there were pretty good at picking out the AT coins. Or Maybe I just lucked out and this person actually had a real toned coin.

Here is the auction link: Link
I am sure you will know who he is once you see the sellers name.

    This implies AT.....

I agree. If the coin is NOT cleaned ANACS will simply state, "Artifical Toning" on the insert. If the coin is cleaned and AT they will state "Cleaned & Retoned".

    SEGS does the same thing.

It might imply the coin is cleaned and naturally "retoned", but does NOT preclude the above either.

BINGO! "Retoned" is an ANACS euphamism for AT that isn't too garish & in their opinion is "market acceptable" with a down grade. If the jpeg is accurate on the colors, I personally think you got a "gift". They should have body-bagged this.
  • I think the only way ANACS would've bagged it is if they threw some PVC in on top as well.
