Andy, I might dip my chicken nuggets, but I would never dip that lovely coin.

I will double your profit and offer two bucks for it.

I am assuming you were around when it was

minted and only paid a dollar for it. Abeimage

  • why would you take the chance of ruining a great coin and lessening it's value? Of course, if you don't care about de-valuing the coin and dipping will make it more pleasurable for you, go ahead and dip.

I still say you dip it till it's an even color and then whiz it till it's bright and shiny again.

  • Hey Eureka -

I hope you're kidding. The coin survives uncorrupted since 1776 and you want to dip it now?

Please sell it to me as is if you are seriously considering this.

What is the metal composition? Brass, silver, pewter, something else?
  • 1jester1jester Posts: 8,637 ✭✭✭
It doesn't really look too much like silver. The Redbook mentions that "Pewter pieces in original bright Uncirculated condition are worth an additional premium." Does pewter really have that bright luster?

How many die varieties were produced for the Continental Currency/Curency? Only 2? Were there different ones for the different metals? This particular example seems to match the picture in the Redbook. Perhaps it's authentic.

Its authentic. And its pewter. And based on the photo it looks original and attractive.

Dipped pewtwer looks like, well, dipped pewter. Which is great if the intention is to sell the coin to someone who doesn't know anything about these and wants one thats real 'shiny'.

I assume Eureka is kidding about dipping, but maybe not.

I've never had the "pleasure", but (based on subsequent slab grades) I've seen winners and losers.

I have no idea about the long term effects of dipping pewter, but for some reason I suspect it should be a concern. Any chemists out there with an opinion?

If this coin is real then I would have to say this is the worst question I have ever, ever seen posted here! How can you possibly even consider dipping this coin? Frankly, this question again perfectly illustrates my argument for the need of an ORIGINAL SURFACES DESIGNATION for colonial, type and gold coins. There is just no excuse whatsoever to even consider dipping this coin. I am not even extending my usual apology for expressing my thoughts because these circumstances just border on insanity.

    Wallstreetman:

While I agree it is a possibility that the coin may have been dipped previously, I would reserve judgement on that issue until having the opportunity to inspect the coin in person. The lighting combined with the background color makes that determination from the picture/scan posted next to impossible.
