Ever sold coins to the smelter?

CoulportCoulport Posts: 1,087 ✭✭✭
I asked this on the World Coin Forum too.

I'm about to.
Got another batch of cleaned coins and they never seem to sell.
Decided to gather them all up and take them to that final coin grave yard.
The most money I made are on coins I haven't sold.

Got quoins?

Does the smelter pay more than a dealer or buyer for junk silver or gold? If not, why bother?

Nope, I couldn't bear it. I sold those kinda coins as bulk silver. Not a great price, but at least it might end up with someone who would like it.

    Generally they do.
You just have to figure your time and volume.

  • After realizing that half my unslabbed "MS" Morgan collection is either PVC contaminated, whizzed, cleaned, pi$$ed on or whatever, it's tempting. I'll be looking in the phone book . . .

I'm tempted to drill holes in my junk silver before it goes to a "smelter". That way no one else gets screwed by dealers who don't care who they screw.

  • I also forgot the ones that were AT or s**t on.

mrdq, you hit on why I think they should go to the smelter. I don't want anyone else to get screwed by this junk. I'll gladly take the financial hit and drill holes in them if it means that someone else up the road, whether it's 10 or 100 years from now won't get screwed the same way I did. In the mean time, check my new sig line for their current use.

if the $ amt. is small, pass the coins out at halloween. you might create a new coin-collector some day. i can't tell you how many rolls of dateless buff's, wheat cents, etc, i've passed out over the years.

& if the kid is already a savvy collector, maybe your coins will scare him!

Pontiac, 50,000 wheat cents!?!!! Wow, that's a lot.

Personally, I think it's sort of a shame to send them to the smelter. I'd prefer to put them back into circulation or give them out at Halloween or something. Who knows, perhapse in 100 years some of them will be quite valuable.

  • I think I like the gift idea better. I'm so easily swayed. image I just don't want them in my collection anymore.
