What's Wrong With This Jefferson?

This is a 1988-d NTC MS65 slab that says Toned. I know how you feel about NTC but the auction picture made the coin look interesting. Now that I have it, it's not so interesting. It does not look MS to me at all unless there was something wrong with the die. Maybe someone can tell me what is up with this Jefferson. Thanks.

The fields have radials like an MS Jeff... but it is so very hard to tell from the devices because the color masks the state of the metal. It is probably true that this one would have to be seen in person.

I know very little about Jeffersons, so take this with a grain of salt. Unless that's a very weak strike, the coin looks AU to me.

I guess I was wondering because the letters around the rim are flat like and the hair looks rubbed or something.

severe orange peel, struck from overused dies and overgraded. the reverse detail isn't really bad but the obverse looks terrible, possibly grease in the die or overpolished to remove clash marks. the saving grace is the luster which appears strng in the scan.

hey lori, a picture might be worth a thousand words, but since you have the coin in hand, why not give a description as best you can?

I bought it because it looked like Jefferson was blowing smoke out of his mouth. Dumb reason but oh well.

The hair is very flat looking and not much detail at all. The rim by the LIBER looks rubbed down and the top half of those letters are flat like too.

The rev looks better but there is not much detail, no steps at all. Hope that helped?? Not good at describing. I have humongo pictures if you need them.

2 things make it bad

1) old dies should have been thrown out long ago - causes the big radial streaking

2) grease filled part of outer liberty - grease used to prolong die life



and then 3) not enough color for Lorisoddsandends - original picture must have been colored/vaguely out of focus?

Not sure what you are saying. I bought it because it looked like he was blowing smoke out of this mouth. The coin looks just like the picture.
