Jefferson Nickels "Full Step?"

Hello, to anyone who can shed some light in my direction:

After about 20 years in my safe I pulled out the coins from my past collecting. I used to pick up war nics at any chance if they looked good. After discovering this web site and reading about " Full Step" I started looking at my coins. All have four lines, creases, indentations in the step area with a broken line at the bottom. Two however have 5 complete lines, creases, indentations or whatever they are called. I read about 4 step ,4 1/2 step, 5 step and full step. Question is are the steps the creases or the raised areas.

Also would PCGS give the grade of "Full Step" only to 5 complete, unbroken lines. I would like to send them in and have them graded, but hearing the term "body bagged" ,don't know what that means, I am kind of aprehensive.

One more item, and I am grateful for all and any responses, if I join the collector club is it my understanding that the gold level you recieve four free submissions. Then I hear that there is a 5 coin minumim.

Again appreciative of any and all responses.

If there is anything that bridges the steps, they won't be considered full step. It needs to be five uninterupted lines running between the steps. The steps are the raised areas. PCGS will attribute full step to 5 uninterupted lines (meaning a 5 step nickel).

Bodybagged means the coin is rejected for certification due to things such as damage, artificial color, harsh cleaning, etc.

If you join the gold level, you get 4 free regular submissions. You don't need to worry about the minimums on that one because it is a special invoice.

    And welcome to the board!
  • Expert Collector,

Thanks for the quick response . I asked this same question to the Q&A Fourm and I assume their is only one person responding to that board, who is I'm sure way to busy to get to everyone.
I do think with your description I have 2 coins that will pass the grade.
    Be joining soon.

    Thanks again

There are a couple of nice threads on full step designations here in the board's archives.

Here is a great link on learning about full steps.

Hope you enjoy your stay with us!

    Reply from David Hall:

There are 4 creases in a PCGS "Full Steps" Jefferson nickel. When counting the steps, the top step counts too...so a four crease nickel has five steps

    Am I missing something?
If David says 4 lines create a 5 step then what about the one I have with 5 lines "6 step" ?

    Dazed and confused.
