Input sought. Draco's submission brings up a good point. Is submitting Bust and Seated just a crap

Experienced numismatists are aware that most Bust and Seated material,
as well as Barbers have been cleaned at one time or another. I have heard
estimates as high as 70%. So when you think about it, any submission of
these is really a crapshoot? Your thoughts? I realize there are concessions by
grading services for light cleaning, but still highly subjective.

Example...I sent an 89-CC dollar to NGC some time ago. Bagged for cleaning. Now it's a VF 20 in my eye...and a bunch of people looked at it before I bought it as well as a hard look by me. I have NO doubt that the coin was probably cleaned at some point in it's life, but there were no noticable hairlines and the color was good. I figure it was market acceptable. Well, in so many words, NGC said that they just didn't want the coin in their holder with what they determined was that appearance.
In the end, it went to ANACS and got a straight up, no net, VF 20...which in my eyes and by reading the ANA standard is where it ought to be.
You said it very well. "Do they want the coin in their holder?". Its highly
subjective, I agree 100%.

I sent in a 1799 Bust Dollar that my dealer said was stored in a leather pouch. PCGS said it was cleaned.
