2 Questions about die rotation.

What position does the coin have to be set before you determine the degree of rotation?Example of what I mean. The date is parallel to a table edge.

Also is it the reverse that is always considered rotated?

The obverse should be in an upright position. On a US coin the Reverse should be completely inverted. you can't use something like "the date being parallel to the table ege" because only a very few coins have the date in a straight line. On early date coins the date moves around since it was punched in by hand. It is best to use the main device and hold it so that it is upright.

Yes, since it isn't possible to know which die rotated convention dictates that it is the reverse that is rotated.

The Reverse is not always what is rotated. In the Mercury Dime series the Reverse is the Hammer Die so what actually rotates is the obverse. I believe a few other series have the reverse as the Hammer Die also but not completely sure about this.
