What’s the longest it’s ever taken you to locate a specific coin?

Have you ever had to look for years (or decades) before finding a key date or condition rarity for your collection? I’ve seen coins offered as “once in a lifetime opportunities.” In some cases, that’s probably not an exaggeration on the dealer’s part.

For those of you who were patient enough to wait almost indefinitely for that special coin, what was the driving force that kept you from just forgetting about it? Which of your coins was the most difficult to obtain, and how long did it take you to find it?

It took me 24 years (from 1973 to 1997) to locate a 1945-P MS-67FB NGC dime which was the same dime I saw in 1973 and stupidly did not buy.

The longest I've waited... Not including mailing time, about an hour or two. image
  • Now Michael.......it's all about "sharing" you know! Remember how impressed you were with the Oreville post and his 24 year wait to buy a previously seen coin?........

The Ex-"Crown Jewel" of my collection! 1915 PF68 (NGC) Barber Half "Eliasberg".

Once again resides with Legend, the original purchaser "raw" at live Eliasberg auction. Laura and i "love" the same lady!

Been waiting approx 3 1/2 years for one in particular right now. (Dont want to identify the piece, for fear it will cost me even more than the strong money I am expecting to pay as it is)

    Previously,
IT took me three + years to locate a nice PCGS encapsulated 1904-s Barber half in high circualted grade, only to sell after 1 year to a tremendous offer.( Well than doubled my purchase price in which I paid high end retail to start with)

I'd wanted an 1860-O dime since I started collecting at the age of 6 or 7. I found one over twenty years later, about 5 years ago, and now, due to a personal financial need, it's up for sale. Anybody looking for an 1860-O dime?

I had always wanted a capped bust half eagle since I was a 10 year old kid 25 years ago,
but was only seriously searching for the right one at the right price for about 3 years before finding
    <-------------------- this one. image
it's the centerpiece of my collection.

in second place, at a 2-year intensive search, not just kind of looking around, was this early dollar, my only 3 criterion were middle circulated grade, appeared never been washed, PCGS holder.

it was very very satisfying to finally find and acquire both coins image

Still looking for mine: 1902-O Micro-O Morgan in problem-free original condition (translation: PCGS will grade it), in VF20 or better.
