Can someone get me a price for this???

I don't have the coin in hand it is in a safety deposit box. I found a list of coins my father baought back in the 80's and was trying to figure out the value for my mom. The one coin I can not find is a 1871- 1/4 Dollar California gold coin.

Thanks
Mark

Don't those have some kind of weird attribution numbers? That number, and the condition of the coin would probably be needed to set a value. Heritage used to do that sort of thing for members, I think. mdwoods

  • Octagonal or round?
When I was a child, I caught a fleeting glimpse
  • It has been a while since seeing the coin but I think it was round.

    Thanks

Okay, here goes. The 2003 Redbook has two pages on "California Small Denomination Gold" (pp. 304-305). There are estimated to be 10,000 genuine pieces (almost 500 varieties) still around, plus many times that number of restrikes and replicas, with no numismatic value. 12 of the most common octagonal quarter dollars and 11 of the most common round ones, are briefly described. The Redbook values range from $115-450 dollars in EF40, $150-650 in AU50, and $225-925 in MS60. Apparently those values are the floor for genuine gold two-bit pieces. They were made from 1852-82. Although minting them became illegal in 1864, the law wasn't enforced until 1882. All genuine examples have CENTS, DOL., DOLL., or DOLLAR on the reverse

Thank you Mark for giving me the opportunity to learn something very interesting about coinage and its history, especially since it involves my home state.image That's what I joined this forum to do!image
