jefferson nickel prices - coinworld

In the March 17 issue of Coin World - The prices of Jefferson Nickel Proof coins from 1960 to present, seems pretty much higher than usual. They are about double PCGS amounts.

Also, could you explain how to tell the difference between a Jefferson MS65 and a Proof coin??

Thank you.

A proof coin is a coin that was made by a special process - 2 strikes, more pressure, individually handled and made for and sold to collectors. They usually have reflective fields (flat area) and sharp edges and letters. Proof coins can be graded from 1 to 70.

MS coins are Mint State or uncirculated. MS coins are from 60 to 70 in range of grading - depending on strike, luster, nicks, eye appeal.

Most (if not nearly all) the time, you get proofs from proof sets or those that are selling proof coins from sets. The mint state (MS) coins come from circulation at the bank, in change, and some of the really nice ones come from official US Mint mint uncirculated sets.
  • Welcome Joann!

The most desirable proof Jefferson nickels have frosted devices and mirror like fields. Most Jeffersons minted after 1977 are like that. Here is a photo:

Please compare that to the nicest nickel you can find in change image
