I believe that ACG will not be in business much longer, and that NTC will own the garbage market.

Over the last six months, there has been a dramatic change in the number of listings on eBay from these two self-slabbers. Searching the two now has NTC consistently coming up with double the listings of ACG. It wasn't that long ago that NTC was only a blip and ACG dominated the junk end. ACG dealers are jumping ship as fast as they can, and moving over to NTC. A prime example is Centsles.

And, you know what? In my experience, which granted is limited to 1964 proof Kennedys, NTC is worse than ACG. With ACG I never saw an overgrade worse than 3 points. I've seen plenty of NTC coins overgraded by 5 points. Most recent example is a coin holdered by them as PR69 that has massive hairlining in the left obverse field.

The only real difference between these two sleazy outfits is that the principals of NTC are smart enough to keep their mouths shut and not try to threaten and intimidate their critics. ACG is going down not only because they suck, but because the company founders are profoundly stupid.

russ, i've definitely seen overgrades w/acg at > 3 points, my opinion. i recall in particular a bust quarter graded acg vg-10 that i called ag-3.

that said, i've seen overgrades of that caliber in EVERY slab. i would agree though that i am more likely to disagree w/ a acg grade than w/ other slabs

    Karl,

The difference is that with real grading companies, we don't see it consistently.

I agree with Rus in that ACG is going down and NTC is going up. But I feel as more people get on the internet, the more they will learn about the differences between grading/slabbing companies. I have not dealt enough with NTC to form an opinion on my own. I did call them on the phone last week and they did not give me warm fuzzies about their guarantee. Basically they said that they would never downgrade a coin in one of their holders. If the grade is on their holder, it stays their for life.

Accucrap has shot themselves in the foot so many times I'm don't know how they are still standing. Having a bounty posted on their home page is a clue I don't want to deal with these people. I was thinking over the weekend another service will just take their place as the bottom rung. What marketing genius came up with a service who has the word "mistrust" in their name. People must love overgraded coins. $40 coins "trends" at $4,000. Gimme a break.

  • Now that I think about it, I remember seeing more NTC slabs than ACG slabs at the last Long Beach show.

I wonder if the action against ACG will have any impact on the bottom feeders?

    Russ,
I agree with you. The problem is as long as there is a "sleazeball dealer network," there will be someone stepping up to the plate to provide the overgraded coins for them. Another part of the problem is many collectors, including the majority that responded to a survey a few weeks ago, have no qualms about supporting these dealers, if the right coin came along.

I have seen ACG XF40's that were clearly Fines. That is about a twenty point difference. Twenty points off!!

Well, I don't find their grading of Franklins, either proof or business strike, to be worth a darn. I wouldn't buy a Kennedy, but if you say their grading of the Kennedy half sucks, then I'll go along with that.

I've purchased some Morgans that are fabulous. Definitely make the grade or slip by only 1 point. With the DEEP discount for the holder, they are real bargains.

Plenty of people out there that say they grade coins dated prior to 1930 very well. In some series, I definitely agree. The same people say they grade Moderns for crap, but who cares? Look for the bargains in the earlier series. image

treat all coins as if they were raw.

i recently saw a pcgs-slabed chalmers token that was overgraded by 35 points, imo, so it can defintely happen to anyone. actually, i believe that pcgs consistently overgrades colonials by at least 3 points, probably 5 points.

however, i agree w/ you russ, regarding "consistency" in terms of what's typically collected.

I've said it before and I'll say it again...If Accucrap expended as much time and energy solving their own quality and PR problems as they did gunning for their critics they just might be a market force...too late for that now, though. With regard to NTC...nuMISTRUST...nuff said image

    Oh yeah...I agree with Russ.

    Cheers,
