I know there was an article recently regarding patterns being included in the red book every other year. Did anyone else read that?? References would be appreciated.....I can't find the article.

Maybe in even numbered years - none in the 2003, or any of my others which all happen to be from odd-numbered years.

I've already filed the Coin World that it was in...a summary section of patterns including the most popular coins will be included next year and will appear every other year rotating with some other section that is currently included (don't remember what the other section was)...(this to keep the number of pages constant for the next several years).

Did it say which patterns would be included?

Rick: your schoolgirl patterns are out -- too aggressive looking eagle in this politically correct age. (It was too hostile looking back in the 1870's!) Then again, given this President's kick ass style, which by the way I admire, maybe the design is timely after all.

    Rick,

I don't remember the CW article saying anything other than words to the effect of "major varieties/types". I first heard about their inclusion from Mitch months before the article though...and although I don't recall anything as precise as J-XXXX numbers being discussed I do remember him mentioning several common names (could just have been speculation, but if you have plenty of free time you might want to check with him). image

Mitch...if you read this I'm not trying to dis your long-windedness concerning patterns...in fact I wish there were more people who enjoyed talking about coins in general without gravitating to whatever they may have in stock at the moment.

Thanks for the help, guys. BTW, Rella, I love talking patterns, but that would be gravitating toward my inventory.imageimage

Gemtone, I certainly hope those defiant eagles become popular.

RELLA: That is easy to do when you have nothing in stock ever as RKKAY buys them all and always makes sure you have none left at any given moment! image

Without getting into the boring details, my understanding (hearsay on top of hearsay) is over the next (2) RED BOOK editions, a significant portion of the patterns will be covered.

If you guys want patterns in the redbook, call or write and offer your services as a contibuting editor - I am sure you could talk them into giving you 2-5 pages for descriptions/pictures and you could then rotate what you want every year.

In my old redbooks, "pattern" does not even make the index nor "Judd".

One argument is they include patterns already but do not designate them as such -> 1856 FE cent, Gobrecht dollars.

In my opinion, patterns are more significant than "private or territorial gold coins".
