Does this Roosevelt have "Full Bands" or not??? UPDATED with MS67 pics

Here is where it gets tough in my opinion. This is a 1971 in an MS66 holder. The strike is nice and deep in my opinion, as evidenced by the middle portion of the lower bands. However, the sides of the bands are not filled in. I don't think the sides of the bands were on the die, otherwise they would have shown on the strike like the middle, which is the deepest part of the bands.

Does this count for "full bands" or not? Opinions appreciated.

    I would say NO.

    The top band looks fine.

But the bottom does not go all the way across.
(It is full in the center but not at the ends.)

Not quite FT in my opinion. 70-80%?

From what I have heard, this wouldn't get the nod. I hope this helps. image

I have a fair number of silver dates, and also later dates than the 1971 that have full lower bands. However, these early 70's are tough. I've got two 1971's in MS66 and another in MS67. The MS67's bands are a little more full, but still a little weak on the sides. If PGCS gives no leeway on the early 70's, they are going to be next to impossible to find in full bands. I'll post a picture of the lower bands on the MS67 later tonight.

If PCSG uses the standard that the band must be full and complete as they do on the Mercury dimes, even a bag mark on a full band coin will not get the designation. It the 70's coins all look this way it could be the counter part to the 1945 Mercury. Millions minted and only a few with FB.

I think the MS67 doesn't make it either--Close but no cigar.

By the way, the pops for 1971 are:

    MS66 - 22
    MS67 - 9

And that is is one of the easier 1970-1974 philly dimes. The pops for 1970 are:

    MS66 - 8
    MS67 - 1

And as I have said on other threads, it's not for a lack of trying.

Now, compare the MS67 with a blowup of Hall's example, albeit, a SILVER coin which strikes better than clad . . .

NGC is going to use FB desination, too, and they're description is found in the link above.

I would think there will be a learning curve for people to go through. There will be some people selling the coins without the designation as 90% full, or some other percentage because they don't make it, yet they are close.
