I use it on my large cents. It really helps to take off some of the old crud on them.

does it change the color? is it used for just taking off the crud?

Does not change the color at all. It is used to just loosen the crud. Use a Que tip and just wash it good. Read the label though it is very dangerous stuff. It evaporates in the air.

no harm, totally removable, often thought of as a miracle elixor for copper (not for human consumption)

Supposedly off the market, although it is available almost everywhere. It's decent stuff to do exactly what Toneddollars stated.
