First unopeded PR sets

I got my first unopeded PR set. I bought 2, a 1962 and a 1964. Nothing CAM. But something better the JFK is AH and is an easy 67. The 62 set had a super cool Dime with a red rev and a target toned obv with yellow on the outside edge and red in the center it also had a blue and yellow rainbow nickel and a frankie with orange molted toning on both sider and a penny thatis starting to turn purple!

Sounds as if you did okay... You might consider submitting the Kennedy if you feel it is a 67.

Wow - you might have got a genuine Unopened set, not just one that is currently unopened.

    Nice finds

Accented Hairs suck. I don't know why anybody would want one.

  • Wow. I have bought in the last few weeks 18 "unopened" 64 proof sets with no luck. I have 10 that should be here any day now. Maybe I will luck out and at least find a toned Jefferson.

  • Russ, what do PR-67 AHs go for?

    << <i>Russ, what do PR-67 AHs go for? >>

I have no idea. I don't care about them, so I don't pay any attention.

eBay average closing price for PCGS slabbed PR67 Accented Hairs over the last 90 days is $48.57.

I'd note, though, that it is a lot harder to get a PR67 in these than many think. Check it VERY carefully for hairlining, as the AH is far more prone to this problem than the second obverse die.

This Pr66 went for stupid money, IMO.link

  • You are lucky. I have gone through 10 "unopened" proof sets looking for toned coins. Not a one. I bought a couple of opened sets that did not mention toning but guess what? Yep they had toned coins. My neat find was a 1976 perfectly even toned in a med. gold Roosie. I am sure it will go pr69dc.
  • The PR66 went for very stupid money. I purchased the same coin for $18 about a month ago. Amazing how many don't do their homework before buying a coin.

You did very well, since eBay average closing price for PCGS slabbed PR66 Accented Hairs over the last 90 days is $33.20 - not including the one that went for $71.

I bought a PCGS PR67 AH on the boards almost a year ago for $30 or $35, can't remember. When I wanted to sell it about 6 months ago or so, I was selling it at $35, and the person said the price was too high!! I'm glad I didn't sell it any lower.

  • Should I cut the coins out of the set?

Keep it in the set, and sell it! Then you can afford to buy some more gold.

  • But if I get 1 or 2 coins slabbed i would be able to get more money wouldnt I?

    KK,

You haven't cut the coin out of the celo and you're grading it "an easy 67"?

    Russ, NCNE
  • No Russ, I already cut out the AH. I am talking about the 62 set with the toned coins.

Great Job KK, watch out for the hairlines. I'd hate to see you with me at the bottom of the PCGS pile with a PR63 or PR62. They look normal, but look at them in every angle with the light.
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

    kk:

I believe that PCGS will accept proof sets that are in their original holders, in your case, the plastic wrap. If this is correct--and you should check it--I think it would be wise to submit the entire original proof set to be slabbed and graded. If you cut out the toned coins, you run the risk of PCGS deciding (incorrectly in this case) that the coins are AT. So, if I were in your shoes, I'd submit the entire set and figure that the extra coins I pay to have graded are simply insurance that the coins I want to be graded actually wind up graded and not returned to me in a bb.
