"Found 1884-S Barber Half

My wife was cleaning out her dresser the other day and found this. Said i gave it to her to save. I'v done this over the years but do not remember this coin, dead brain cell i reckon.
According to Red Book this is a FINE. Thing is it looks beter than any VF i've seen in "completed items" on ebay.

If the pics load give me your opinion. BTW it sure looks cleaned. I adjusted one of the pics to show true color.

  • wow looks like that thing got hit by a brillo pad. But still a cool find and right under your nose. I wonder if anyone has pulled something like this out of circulation.

An 1884 Barber half? Man, that should be worth a mint!

Right along with the 1899 Lincoln cent, the 1912 Kennedy half, and the 1982 Mercury dime!

Or is it a 1984, like your picture links say? That should be worth just as much!

(But seriously, it does look like a strong Fine, albeit cleaned).

...think I'll start checking my wife's dresser drawers. image

(Her dresser IS an antique, from her great-grandmother, I believe...)

I woulda thought XF "without the cleaning".

Thats another rant. Is it XF w/the cleaning or XF "after he cleaning".

    XF- don't think so.

    VF- might squeak by.

That's not including any net-grading for cleaning.

Coin looks like A very stong VF. There is much glare by the LIBERTY which obscures what looks like a full LIBERTY and a strong, but not complete looking band under it. On Ebay that would be hawked as an XF for sure. It has been harshly cleaned and as such would probably sell for what Fines are priced at.

It is still a Barber coin, and as such I ask that you please give it love, worship, and the adoration it deserves! image

I'm at work and can finally get on line without having to hurry. This coin was in a plastic flip for i dunno how long, don't know if that had any effect or not.
ARCO - From looking at completed auctions on ebay you're right about the XF and I will take care of it, already took it out of the plastic flip.
