New label policy (to those of you that care)

Many thanx to all that commented previously on whether you would rather have a raw coin or one that is encapsulated with a sticker on it. I have decided to leave the coins in the holder and place a sticker with my opinion on it that does NOT cover the service's opinion.

I agree with this. Good job!

The more opinions the better if you ask me. As long as you don't get lost in all the noise that is. image

I like that idea. I wish more dealers would offer the alternate opinion. It would make for a great discussion point, (and opportunity to learn), when considering coins at shows.

that is an excellent idea. if you take it 1 step further, you'd leave previous owner's opinions on the slab as well. that well, there is more than just a 3d party grade, you get input from numerous independent sources (theoretically)

in fact, i'd almost think slabing would be ideal this way, if an historic litany of grades for a particular coin could be maintained, but i guess that's unrealistic.

That's a great idea, Julian, and I think it will stimulate interest (of course, you have nice coins anyway).

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

sounds like what one would write on the flip insert for a raw coin: your opinion of the grade, and a comment or three, such as PQ, nice toning, well struck, mark free, or lusterous, for example.

I am curious as to the ratio of times you upgrade the coin from the TPG opinion to the times you downgrade. half and half? 3 to one? 10 to one?

  • Hi all! We downgrade about 10-15% of slabs, and upgrade perhaps 5-10%. Most of them are usually pretty accurate, if you're dealing with the big three.
