I have a couple 70's proof sets that I HAVE TO brighten up a bit.
They are as dark a grey as I have seen and it's gettin on my nerves.
MS70 or Acitone.........

What's the nature of the surface contaminants? Haze? Spots? Clad coins, I assume? Personally, I'm not a proponent of dipping clad after seeing far too many that developed problems after an extended period of time. MS70 is gentle, though, so it might be safe to use on these. I've never tried acetone on clad, so I don't know what the comsequences would be.

Russ they are Proof sets from 70 & 71.
I don't know why but they are becoming almost a charcoal grey.
Really taking away from the mirrors.

The half in the 1970 set is pretty safe to dip if done correctly. The other coins being clad are more problematic. The 1971 set is all clad and, to make matters worse, these sets tend to have really crappy planchets. 1971 sets are dirt cheap. If it were me, I'd probably just go buy another one; unless these have some sentimental value attached?
