its 12 volt start up and 5 volt running...its the variable speed disc drive that they use...it uses more power on startup than when its running...so it wont overheat...but they do anyways and then the top cover on the drive gets warped...microsoft wanted $145 to fix it...i just tore apart an old computer drive and used the cover
