What is PCGS trying to do to the coin market?

This was said by HRH when asked about adding the * designation for PQ coins "....I can make a strong argument that this change would screw up the market more than it would help it. That said, we are looking at the concept....."

so it would screw up the market more than it would help it but they are still thinking about itimage

It seems to me that they are considering the idea, but not likely to implement it.

I think I'd have to agree with that one. It probably would "screw up the market more than it would help it."

  • Drop the PQ idea, and the star designation. Instead, use a decimal point! A 65.6 is better than a 65.5 and we can all crack our favorites out and resubmit for the tenth of a point. That is, until they gor to hundreths! Imagine the price jump from a 65.43 to a 65.44. Ridiculous? Yes.

all you have to do is LOOK at the coin to see if it's "pq" or not.

  • Karl is right, you can look at the coin and decide if it is PQ. Allowing additional grading points or designations will only increase revenues for grading companies because evereyone will be resubmitting already slabbed coins.

"Making a strong argument" doesn't necessarily mean it is the position that person holds - it just means there is more than one perspective.

I think I would applaud anyone (in most cases) who will give consideration to opinions contrary to the one(s) they may currently hold.

BTW, it doesn't matter if it was HRH, gmarguli, Legend or anyone else - I feel the same way, so don't misinterpret that as some sort of PCGS/HRH bandwagon statement.

Tenths are ridiculous, too. When there is so much inconsistency between whole number grades (63/64/65, etc.), how can anyone rationalize even finer divisions?

PCGS will do whatever they think there is a market for.

I hate it when you see my post before I can edit the spelling.

    Coppernicus,

I think the decimal point idea is great imo. It would be much better than just putting a star on the label. I have a NGC ms65*1946-s quarter with the most die polish marks that I have ever seen. I don't understand how it got the star designation.

PQ means Premium Quality. It generally means the coin was a near miss for the next grade up. It is also used for coins that, though technicly graded properly, have outstanding eye appeal.

Sorry dorkkarl but I don't think that really solves the issue for a lot of folks.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I agree that by looking at the coin you can decide what is PQ to you but the problem comes when you deal with another party that doesn't share your concept of PQ.

It is exactly the reason above that I don't do MS. What I think is PQ is obviously not what the "market" thinks is PQ. I recognize that I do not have the eye, experience or both to dabble in high grade coins so I avoid them and prevent myself from the heartaches expressed in many threads where someone either believed or was led to believe that they had something "special" only to find out later that they were "wrong" image.

As far as PCGS, I think it would be a good move for them. (Just think of all those re-submissions image )

    Joe.
